Trump truly believes that the election was stolen. If so is that a game changer? Less of a cunning criminal and more a deluded idiot? Hopefully won't stop him being made accountable for the crimes though...
Ignorance is no defence. It just means he's ignorant.
If trump genuinely believes the election was stolen, it suggests his mental illness has reached a point where he is not connecting with reality at all. I want to see trump and his appalling family held accountable for their actions, but bone spurs himself really needs professional psychological help to deal with his delusions.
Is there any question trump is a deluded fool?

The thing about lying successfully is that you need to believe your own BS to sell it and that is Trump's only real talent. Selling BS to bigger or greedier idiots than himself.

He's isn't a master criminal like Capone who could walk into and out of court like he was untouchable. Trump has been relying on selling people down the river to keep himself out of court and he's running out of people to throw in front of the bus.

Also the people who he's thrown in front of the bus are turnong on him.

I said it years ago, he is a criminal and not a smart one. He's not smart enough to cover his own tracks and now we're all seeing it (unless you're the fool who's bought Trump's BS).

There's also the whole trump thing of him calling people losers, it's the biggest insult he can think of, coupled with his insecurities about being the best ever, having the biggest crowd, the highest rating... so when he lost and lost hugely, in fact the same that Clinton lost to him... it hurts him, he can't accept he lost.
It's at this point in the future trump biopic, that there's a black and white flashback to his childhood, where his father is repeatedly calling him a loser, whilst figures of his peers flash around him laughing. He eventually collapses to the ground in tears and drops his snowglobe golf clubs.

I think you're right, trump needs to win at any cost, and I think when his losing plan to steal the presidency is laid out in simple terms, he'll irrationally still cling onto thinking he won, because the alternative is unthinkable to him - for all the privileged life benefits he's had, all the laws he's broken, all the bailouts he's been given, he's still the bigliest loser.
Someone like Trump projects. Accuses his opponents of doing exactly what he does (cheating at the election) so of course his worst insult is the thing he is but least likes being called. A loser.

He's not just a loser, he's the king of losers. Lost the fortune he inherited, failed at business, on his 3rd wife that doesn't love him, managed to get the presidency but without the popular vote and still couldn't do anything. The last reminder of his loserdom, he lost the 2020 election despite the his best attempts to rig it.

What a handy distraction for Justice Thomas to take the lead in striking down Roe v Wade in the US, just as we were starting to find out more about his wifes involvement in trumps coup attempt..., just as trumps plans, complicity was being fully exposed...

Or is this that they think the whole sorry lot is about to come falling down because the DOJ have started moving, multiple raids, seizures, subpoenas. These January 6th hearings, and the DOJ’s accelerating investigations have people worried that a lot of right wing political figures are at risk of charges/prison time.

That includes the strong possibility of Ginni Thomas being indicted for her part in trumps coup attempt, and it’s not clear if Clarence Thomas has legal exposure as well, but with his sole decision in Feb it's more likely the case . At best Justice Thomas will be forced to recluse himself if he doesn't face censure for being involved, even if just giving legal advice.

Is this desperation to get this done whilst they can, because it's most likely handed the Dems the midterms on a plate

Alex Holder, trump documentary maker there to record his moment of triumph, is doing a lot of talking.

Holder says that the committee is particularly interested in his footage of Ivanka Trump, due to “possible inconsistencies” between what she said to the documentary crew and what she said to the committee. Ivankas been caught out lying to the committee in her testimony, she told them she told daddy 'no don't do it' yet the documentary footage apparently shows she did exactly the opposite, encouraged trump.

Lying to Congress - thats a crime. Oh dear, what with the fraud cases, these are all stacking up against Ivanka. So much for her and Kushner trying to keep a low profile since daddy lost.

Despite Durhams failure to make anything stick, trump still hasn't given up trying to whitewash his russian collusion and election assistance.

He's now trying the get the National Archives to give right-wing activists John Solomon and Kash Patel access to records to prove his debunked claim that Obama spied on him...
https://www.politico.com/news/2022/06/24/trump-gra...

Of course he was under investigation, there were so many documented contacts between his campaign, his family and russian agents, including meeting with those himself...

Ted Cruz - there's going to be riots
Boebart went on fox to say “Tonight, we are bracing for Democrat cities vandalized by Democrat voters in Democrat states.”
https://twitter.com/i/status/1540520693175144448

They of course are desperate after the Capitol violence to have somethign to pin on others, but it's not working out for them.. Instead a truck ran through an abortion ban protest...

Any minute now they'll be a Fox News Editor: “OK, if we don’t have some violent mobs burning cities soon, cue up the Portland 2020 footage and the Amsterdam vaccine passport protests. They won’t know the difference.”

What can be the outcome from these hearings? Criminal charges?

Yup, the public hearings can make recommendations but it's upto the DOJ to bring charges

This is an interesting take on this, and not a direct connection I'd made - I think I was so shocked with the speed of this announcement that I'd not had time to connect the dots.

I'm now having to process how this change might impact my own daughter who is doing a student exchange with a US university in a red state later this year. I never thought I'd have to have a conversation about access to contraception/abortion with my own daughter.

Thanks again Byker.

It does seem that way. Do as much damage as they can before they ate jailed or voted out. Then hope that people blame the Democrats for the mess they are left holding.

Mo Brooks has told reporters he had multiple conversations directly with Trump about presidential pardons "The president and I had an oral communication, he said put it in writing. So, I put it in writing."

Hum, doesn't excuse why he wanted a pardon, as he tries to put blame onto trump...

Yes but don’t forget that as a younger man in Brooklyn back in the 1990’s he was on record (Meet the Press 1999)as being “very” Pro-Choice. By 2016, and needing to get the evangelicals on board for his election run, he had become loudly Pro-Life. It’s worth YT’ing his interview with Chris Matthews’ that year - when Trump actually floated the idea that women should face (undefined) punishment for procuring an abortion….

The interview is similar to the one in which he was asked to quote one of his favourite passages from the Bible. Frantic sideways glances, back pedalling and then a large serving of word-salad.

Just a further thought. If Trump’s mushroom harvesting exercise with Stormy Daniels had proven inadvertently successful what would have been the outcome ?

Assuming he was already converted to his Pro-Life stance and being a moralistic man (probably the most moralistic man he knows) then surely there would have been only one possible outcome.

15 year old Byron Daniels - Trump II would now be living in luxury with his mother whilst receiving an expensive private education. Furthermore he would be enjoying lavish financial and emotional support from his estranged father.

Then again….

There are no dots to connect.

Alito wrote this opinion, and secondly they are rushing to release all the opinions of cases heard last year before the end of June. I think they had about 30 opinions to release this time last week.

The dots I was connecting was the timing of this announcement, the ongoing Jan 6th sessions and Ginni Thomas.

I knew Alito had written the opinoni, but I wasn't expecting the SCOTUS to make this declaration then it immediately apply, i.e. instantaneously triggering anti-abortion laws.
