Which Android 'flagship' phone?

I've had a Huawei P30 Pro for the last couple of years and been very happy with it - i'd probably still with the P50 if it had Google services... sadly it doesn't...

So that leaves me looking at the following...

One Plus 10 Pro - Brand new out this week, mixed reviews, particularly on the camera - but in general seems pretty good - it's also probably the cheapest.

Pixel Pro 6 - reading the thread on here it seems a bit of a mixed bag in terms of user happiness... plus the 7 is likely out later this year.

Honor Magic 4 Pro - No release date but likely to be pretty good, almost a disguised Huawei. Could be costly though.

S22 Ultra - Good reviews... good spec.... costly though.


What am I missing?

I used to always buy Samsung Galaxy S phones. Got a bit fed up with paying through the nose so last time round I bought a Samsung Galaxy A52 5G. Performance wise you wouldn't know it isn't a top spec phone and while it lacks a little in the looks department I've put a case on every phone I've ever owned to it really doesn't matter.

I now wonder why I ever bothered forking out for the top of the range phones.

I changed from a P30 pro to an s21 ultra a few months ago.

Got to be honest it wasn't worth the upgrade cost

The s21 ultra is noticeably heavier, making it harder to hold one handed. In day to day use, i'm not noticing it to be hugely faster.... yes maybe smoother scrolling but that doesn't justify the large upgrade cost.

The S21 camera seems to take good shots and has the 10x lens, which I haven't found a use for yet. But I was never exactly disappointed with the photos the p30 pro took either...

Maybe if you are a power user you would see more of a benefit of upgrading than I have though.

Honor are a sub division of Huawei, so you may want to explore that avenue

I had a Samsung A70 for 2 years, upgraded 7 months ago to a S21 Ultra as work pays for it. Mrs QD now has the A70.

For my usage the S21 is maybe 10% better - and it's twice the price. Mid-market is where the value is IMO.

Same, but is it worth looking at an earlier S spec phone rather than the A? eg I have an S20+ 5G that was bought new for £400

I swapped my Huawei P20 Pro for an Xperia 1ii a couple years ago and it's been great.

I went from p20 pro to Pixel 6 pro, and that was a worthwhile upgrade - a load of stuff just works a lot better/more reliably on the Pixel (Android Auto, bluetooth connectivity to stuff, audio in calls). Plus the camera is great.

I've not had any problems so far (had it since November), but people do complain about the fingerprint reader - that's been 100% fine for me.

I bought a Pixel 3a over 3 years ago. £400 including an Acer Chromebook thrown in.

Still going strong and I see no need to change until it breaks.

I currently have an out of contract S10 with a cracked screen and a bit of a scratch on glass over the camera, which I use a lot.

Basically no issues with the phone, and might even replace like for like with new. Or have screen replaced again.

Seems like over the years Samsung have hiked up the sticker price of the phones but been giving some good offers (and interest free finance) so overall it works out to be pretty reasonable. For example I ordered my wife an S22 256GB - RRP £820 but got £200 off for trading in any phone (had an old S3 lying around, worth about £10 on ebay) and some Galaxy buds and Disney+ which you could flog for £100-150, so ~£500 net. S22 Ultra has the same chip so not sure it's really worth the premium.

I love my Z3 Flip. Battery life stinks but it's the only "special" phone out there. at least until the Astro Slide arrives.

Just bought OPPO Find X5 Pro to replace a one year old OnePlus 9 Pro.
Well worth the upgrade.

Had most Samsung S models since the S1 and would have recommended them all until ... Recently upgraded to the S21+ and it's the first phone I've had full of bugs, a camera that is just a black screen half the time, and absolutely no worthy improvement on the S20+. The S22 doesn't seem like a big leap in features either so I wouldn't recommend.

I'd agree - another Sony user here. Love my Xperia 1ii. Had Sony for years. A lot less bloat that a Samsung phone. Not the cheapest although the Xperia 5 series do offer good value in my experience.

Is there anything up with the P30? or is it out of security/OS updates now?

If the answer is no for both then why bother, are any of these phones an "upgrade" anymore? I'm writing this as a 33 year old who up until a few years ago used to get a new one every year.

I'm still using a Huawei P20 Pro, until it goes pop I can't see the value in upgrading to anything else, I pay £14 a month for a flexible contract that gives me 100g of 5g data although phone is only 4g and unlimited calls and texts.

I've replaced the internal battery with a new one from Ebay and a new charging port as the phone stopped fast charging, I repaired it myself with the help of a you tube video for about £10 and its still going strong, the NFC doesn't work now I think I forgot to plug something in before I put it back together but never mind.

I wouldn't touch Samsung products personally, after about 18months everyone I've ever owned seems to go wrong might be bad luck I guess.

I like the Honor phones but not having wireless charging I think is a let down, I'm hoping their next phone release has it, might pick one of them up if their in a sale
