After leaving Van Halen, 'Diamond' Dave Lee Roth set up with a new guitar shredder (Steve Vai), and set about making a few superb albums such as 'Eat them and smile' and the seminal 'Skyscraper'.

But in the catalogue there's another one. Jason Becker takes over guitar and 'A little ain't enough' came out. Though sales and critically it wasn't a success, personally I think the album deserves better than what it got.

What are your albums that didn't get the sales, or respect they deserve?

An amazing album, many comment that the stage show was needed to appreciate the music

The album was way ahead of its time and has stood the test of time yet never reached great heights

I went to see them on that tour. Showerings Pavilion (Bath & West Showground) near Shepton Mallet. 1989 or thereabouts.
I still prefer Skyscraper smile

Underappreciated albums from around the same time would, in my opinion, include:
King Swamp - King Swamp
Masters of Reality - The Blue Garden
Dream Theater - When Dream And Day Unite

Super Sonic

Autechre's "draft 7.30"
When I first bought it I couldn't make head nor tail of it, and took it to the charity shop. Then I started getting snatches of tune in my head and wondered 'whats that', then had to buy another copy!

Two from me....

Holidays in Eden - Marillion. Hardline Marillion fans decided it would be crap as a result of no Fish but personally I think it's one of their finest (we used to play No One Can though Headphones on my OH tummy when she was pregnant with our daughter. That song is one of our daughter's favourites and will be the one we will dance to for the Dad and Bride dance at her wedding in September).

Secret Messages. ELO. Cracking stuff on there that was and remains largely overlooked even by supposed ELO fans.

Did you tell her that you used to play it to her while she was inside her mum, or was it a song that was played to her again after she was born and she took to it straight away?

Unlike my cousins, I'm not really a Marillion fan but I have this on CD. It's really good. Dry Land is my personal favourite but there's some great tracks on there.

For me it is probably Axe Victim by Be Bop Deluxe

Thought they were a great band the first time I heard them and that album but never got the recognition they deserved in my view.

IIRC (it was a long time ago) when I saw them as the support act to Sailor (went specifically to see BBD not Sailor) they got an encore. That may be my memory playing tricks though.

Agreed, a great Marillion album. Splintering Heart and The Rake's Progress were my favourite tracks.

She expressed a liking for it when she was quite young and we explained that we played it to here before she was born. Have no idea if there is anything tangible that links the two but given this was at a time when her musical universe revolved around Steps.... who knows? smile

Thank you for the reply, much appreciated

You've convinced me that your daughter was aware of and liked the music before she was born

Bought this when it came out (forgot I had it until reminded here), they were live on the Old Grey Whistle Test at the time which was (probably) the reason I bought it.

Thanks for reminding me about the Tubes, almost forgotten these days...
Nice stuff, a little like a watered down FZ with a little more showtime elements (not to be meant to belittle them!), good musicians and cool songs, that certain 70s swag, great.

Idlewild by Everything but the Girl.
I had it on vinyl then moved away and decided I loved it so much I bought it on CD.
I read Tracey Thorne’s first memoir and she seemed a bit ambivalent about it but I love it. It hasn’t encouraged me to get any other EbtG though.
