Article suggests he put ignition on and car started going back in gear

Most autos cannot start in forward or reverse gear can they?

What happened?

What makes you think it’s an auto?

Article says DSG, through admittedly it's not the most credible source.

£5 on a remote start kit fitted including defeats on the clutch and brake interface.

Prosecute him when he gets out of the hospital, could have killed someone, it’s either a daft modification or a dick move gone wrong.

I know these Audis reasonably well - An Audi TT Mk2

They come with a press clutch to start requirement, you can buy a by-pass switch or the clutch switch may potentially have failed ( a reasonably common failure I believe)

And they do not have electronic handbrakes, so either the handbrake wasn't up , wasn't up properly, or was very weak

However it may be a DSG as I know sometimes on the V5 the cars are listed as manual but are actually DSG (I suppose DSG is technically a manual gearbox but with automatically operated clutches - pedantic I know but can happen!!)

But I suspect it's manual as I don't think the car would let you start it with the gearbox in R if it was an automatic

To be honest, it's stupid but it's not entirely uncommon and this has happened to many people , even me many years ago (in a Ford Granada!) - as the car was so crap it just rocked a bit rather than smashing into one of my neighbours cars

It's not like he was out drink driving and no-one was hurt other than himself and his pride, insurance will cover the rest, let's not be too harsh :-)

What’s the point of bypassing the system that needs you to press the clutch on a manual? To be able o reach in from an open window and start it quickly? For defrosting? Makes no sense really.

I guess it’s in the same Boat as occupancy sensor bypasses I suppose.

My thinking too... I remember VWs of this era annoying people who didn't instinctively depress the clutch when they started a car, so surely a dodgy mod.

In fairness, the current owner might not even be aware of the mod.

Surely there are millions of cars that have been built without a clutch / brake starting interlock?

With or without, i don't think I'd lose the habit of wiggling the gear lever before turning the key.

I don't think it's the interlock defeat that's the dick move here, it's the dick who didn't check it was in neutral.

Indeed, but you’d be more careful wouldn’t you.

It's been a while since I've made the mistake of trying to start a car in gear, but I don't think I've ever had a car that has started if I have. The car will jolt, but against the force of the handbrake and being in gear it hasn't started.

But did you do it on a street without sitting in it?

Are you saying I'm fat and the extra weight is the reason it didn't start? laugh

I have done it when not in the car. I was working on the car and forgot to disengage the gear before trying to start it with my hand through the window.

Very clearly failed to drive in a way that a reasonable and competent person would which resulted in damage to the property of several people. Therefore he should be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention.
