Does anyone leave their car in a public carpark or street overnight? Any security issues/concerns?

What would you do to mitigate risk?

Had Porsche's for the past 15 years using street parking (London garage's/driveways are not the norm). The only time I have ever had issues was when using a car cover - it would entice people to lift it up and look what is underneath it. I don't use a cover anymore - more harm/hassle than good.

I would have much more concerns with a public carpark overnight as at least street parking is right outside my door.

Depends which car. I've left all of them in, e.g., hotel car parks overnight. I wouldn't leave the 3RS or the McLaren on the street, but I street parked both a then-new 996 cab and 997 turbo cab for years. I wouldn't think twice about leaving a regular 991 or 992 outside; I suspect even a GT3 Touring would be OK on the grounds of flying under most people's radar. My neighbour leaves a California on the street.

Depends where, too, of course. The street I'm referring to above is in a pleasant leafy suburb of London. I probably wouldn't be so insouciant about parking any kind of Porsche in some of the gnarlier parts of London.

I would leave our 997 on the road if needs must, and it would not worry me too much. I could not be bothered with steering wheel locks etc.

PS Only on Pistonheads do you get one poster who doesn't understand apostrophes (Porsche's and garage's) followed immediately by another who casually drops in words like insouciant and gnarlier. beer

I parked my various 996's on the street over a period of around 5 years with zero issues.

Changed the last one for a BMW 335D coupe, which was stolen from the same street within 6 months of buying it....

I had more issues in two years with tts stealing (or half stealing ie breaking but being unable to remove) my Clio 172's mirrors in order to presumably upgrade their 1.2L models than I did in the 10 years I parked my 997s on the same London street (SW12).

Only major problem was when the 997 had a window broken when a helpful pair broke every car's windows with an air gun one night.

Bought what is likely to be my only 911 in 2011. Made sure before purchase that I had a garage to put her in, as there was no way I was about to leave my POJ outside in all weathers.
Also usage is infrequent, therefore power availability was essential so I could connect a Maintenance Charger.
I was lucky to end up renting the empty garage right next to our existing one within a few meters of our house in mid Essex. So both Mine and missus toys are tucked up safe when not in use (Missus in particular as hers is SORN'd during the winter)

Tucked up in bed in a temperature controlled garage 24hr security and a 40 second Fogger. Neighbour calls me a car tart
I'm just curious to know what a "40 second fogger" is / does?

My GT3 is left on the driveway at the end of long private drive whilst I wait for my garage to be built. Can't see any reason why it should be left in a garage except for over winter. Just means more of a hassle pulling it in and out! Car is fully PPF'd so no issues leaving it exposed to the elements.

I didnt even know they existed sounds good but are you not worried about being sue'd when they trip and and fall ? , its a serious question as I sleep with a baseball bat quite close to me but I have been told on a few occasions that if I use it im going to find myself in a world of trouble

I parked mine in my drive and one of my sons friends ran his bike along the rear wing leaving a huge scratch. I'd not long had it fixed when my dad came round to visit in his van, got the angle of entry to the drive all wrong and hit the back corner of the car.

It'd probably be safer to leave it parked in the street.

When it arrives it will be in my garage next to my motorbikes. Looking forward to sipping a coffee and just admiring the car in my man cave. smile

993 on the street in London outside our house, with outdoor cover & disklok . Pretty quiet street, seems fine. Used to keep in rented lock up garage but became a hassle to have to drive up there just to take the car out

On my drive which is easily accessible from the road. You could probably touch it without stepping onto my property. Because I'm only company director of a small company.

I use it for Tesco trips and shopping etc so will park in public car parks and backstreets.

In my garage only because I have one that isn't full of junk. Useful for over the winter when it's not used as much so I can keep it on a maintenance charge. However I've had more expensive cars than my 996 on by drive and not worried about them. No hassle getting it in and out when you have a powered roller door biggrin.

Just driving around SW London, I see all manner of cars parked on streets overnight. There's a DBS not far from me, it can't even fit in the designated on-street parking as it's so wide. The owner has more balls than me as he doesn't even park it straight and it's on quite a narrow street (cars can't pass by at the same time). Never been hit though in the year or two that he's had it. The alloys are kerbed to hell, though!

In London N1 and private garage my 997 Turbo and Boxster. My family workhorse is a Skoda Octavia estate and gets bashed into and vandalised on a regular basis (my street is lovely but it’s a rat run for the local council estate). I’d never leave the Porkers outside overnight.

For reassuring feedback, enter your postcode and car. It'll give a crime rating for the area, and your vehicle.

Remember, you can get four mates for a ram raid in an R32 or RS4, less so a 911. So surprisingly 'low risk'.... depending on where you live
