This keeps popping on my car searches.
Not cheap, but looks immaculate and has a Milltek exhaust which wouldnt have been cheap.
Dealer had it on for £9995, now dropped to £8995.
As a Last Hurrah before the EV era hits, surely this would be a good value way in to a V8 when you compare it to a Merc or BMW offering?

Looks good although as you said maybe on the expensive side.
I bought an S5 V8 just over a year ago with the same reasoning and I'm enjoying the sound track
I believe the V8 model/year for the S4 could potentially suffer from timing chain stretch which is an engine out to repair so would be worth investigating that.
As always, get the research done, go in with your eyes open and if you get it, enjoy

Totally, I'm looking for a v8 for similar reasons. Audi even do the A6 V10 for similar amounts.
I can fix pretty much anything on any car so I'm not especially frightened of potential money pits... however, being good at car work does not protect you from having to buy parts so I do worry about that sort of thing and it can still be costly if parts are beyond repair and have to be replaced.
Some v8s are even pretty good on fuel. I just really like the idea of having a v8 and hanging onto it now. I'm almost not that interested in the car it is attached to either. Just the celebration of the type of engine when they're now almost impossible to buy brand new and getting rarer.

It would hold an appeal for me as a Last Hurrah to something with that big an engine and being a V8. We've a straight six M140i and a straight six Z4 Coupe. I do very little miles so would definitely be a sense of occasion driving it.I can fix pretty much anything on any car so I'm not especially frightened of potential money pits... however, being good at car work does not protect you from having to buy parts so I do worry about that sort of thing and it can still be costly if parts are beyond repair and have to be replaced.

A V8 M3 with similar miles would be twice that and just as likely to throw up big bills. A CLS500 could be bought for similar / less but feels like a big cruiser rather than an S4 which at least has a sporting edge to it.
Seems to be a lot of people buying V8's because they're soon to be a thing of the past. I'm not sure I get it really. You can still buy brand new cars with V8 petrol engines so surely they will be around on the used market for decades yet?
I do get that they make a nice noise but 10k for a 16 year old Audi that isn't very fast, sits in the most expensive tax bracket, is extremely thirsty and has high potential for borkage seems a bit steep.

Have a look at the BMW 650, which remains under the radar and silly cheap last time I looked.
I owned one as my daily for four trouble free years. Didn't drop below 25mpg however it was driven and faster than the Ferrari F355 I had as my weekend car, due to the low down torque. The ladies liked it, which was a bonus.
Do your homework though as I believe they can have problems with oil getting where it shouldn't.

The potential borkage is mainly the timing chain & the gearbox can sometimes be problematic, there are some good alternatives.

Take it for a decent road test, especially around town.
I've driven a few VW/Audi sports cars with auto boxes, and the gearbox has spoilt the experience.
Especially in slow speed driving when some can occasionally give you an awful delay.
None of these issues are with the Tiptronic gearbox that is in this vintage of S4 though.I've driven a few VW/Audi sports cars with auto boxes, and the gearbox has spoilt the experience.

Yep, timing chain guides are plastic and wear on these, but best thing is to make sure the car hasn't been started for a few hours and fire it up. You will soon hear if the chain is slack.
Loved my S4 Avant, although the dogs didn't.
Depending on where you are based, there is a guy that does the chains etc but it isn't always just those that need replacing.
These cars seem to have quite a following as he has rebuilt a fair few!

You'll want to get the timing chains & tensioners sorted, budget another £4000 to get it done at an Audi independent specialist.
Better yet, find one that has already had them done. This one supposedly has, but I'd want to see receipts to prove it.

Bugger that. Not a pups chance i'd buy one to spend that on top. That would put me off.Better yet, find one that has already had them done. This one supposedly has, but I'd want to see receipts to prove it.

Yes, one with the work done would make sense.
