So, our plan for this coming months is to back out of our main online retail business and focus on our rental portfolio and other property projects.

I have decided to keep in with a couple of our better suppliers who also allow drop shipping from the UK distributor so we will probably get a basic site set up with the popular products on there and basically just use it as additional savings/income, we already have quite a big following online & long term eBay shop so I am not worried about getting traffic to the site etc and there is no need to push for sales as anything is better than nothing. We weren't planning on doing anything retail related but for the sake of a basic Shopify site running in the background we could probably make about £250-£300 per week for virtually no real 'work'.

As this will be a sideline and ran in the background I realistically wont have time to be on the phones all day, it doesn't sounds great if I am trying to answer questions in the middle of a building site, travelling so its going to voicemail or cutting off, or with my 1 year old daughter shouting in the background etc laugh

Is an email address/contact form and social media links on the site enough, What are peoples opinions on this?

My idea was to be completely transparent in the fact that we are stepped back from the main business (which a lot of customers will have already heard of or used us) and are now running this new site as a part time type company so please send an email and we will reply to any enquires within 24 hours.

Would the lack of a contact number put you off?
The products are new and from major brands (Bosch for example), we will put all the usual supplier tech info on there and we are a UK dealer if anyone wanted to confirm so there probably wont be many questions in all honestly, most of them we could answer in the FAQ but I also want to be completely open and genuine with customers than it look like a scam site so any tips appreciated.

Customers like to see a phone number. We have a Skype number on a small e-commerce site which we could answer if we need to - but most of the time it goes to a voicemail with a recorded message. We email or call back ASAP (usually same day). Hasn't caused any issues so far. We probably get 2 or 3 calls per month with around 300 orders per month. Cost is something like £30 per year for the number.

For an ecommerce site, legally you need to show a physical address, a "contact us" form isnt enough. You dont legally need to show a phone number but its the sort of thing customers expect. As above - its probably not too harmful to have the phone going to a voicemail box with a message that you'll respond back within 24 hours.

Use a service like 'miss moneypenny' who will field calls and email you the enquiry.

They will even answer in your company name.
