Arrest warrant issued for Pootin from the ICC, for war crimes inc the deportation of children..
(OK, this wasn't posted when I started this post)
Means little in reality.
I presume means they have evidence of crimes meeting the bar of genocide, which may feed into some countries willingness to support Ukraine. (OK, this wasn't posted when I started this post)

I wonder if there are practical difficulties for a head of state who can never travel to significant chunks of the world.
Zero I imagine, he will still go to China I guess, and would send Lavrov or one of his other puppets to foreign meetingsEdited by Adam. on Friday 17th March 16:23

However, getting all of Ukraine had the 3 day Special Operation been successful, would have opened up a further, and possibly more likely scenario.
Hungary and Serbia are at the moment more Kremlin leaning than EU/NATO despite being in NATO, and Hungary have a land border with Ukraine in the north and Serbia in the south.....
So I think the danger would have been its success making it much easier for Hungary and maybe Serbia to switch sides again and leave NATO and rejoin Russian Fed, without Russia actually attacking these NATO countries. It would only need Montenegro to do the same, and Russia would then have access to the Adriatic again....and cutting NATO in two.
Hungary is a Nato member but Serbia isn't. Hungary and Serbia are at the moment more Kremlin leaning than EU/NATO despite being in NATO, and Hungary have a land border with Ukraine in the north and Serbia in the south.....

I think the point of attacking a NATO country would have been to collapse NATO, not to get the territory. Attack a tiny country nobody in the USA had ever heard of. Maybe America stays out. NATO is over.
That's the logic. Nobody will ever know if that was the idea.
That problem is gone for good, though.
Even if Trump gets back into the White House? That's the logic. Nobody will ever know if that was the idea.

I wonder if the Putin fanboys have the self-awareness, humility and introspection to consider that supporting a dictator who now has an ICC arrest warrant against their name may not be the right path to take. But I suspect they are already so far gone it's too late.8bit said:
I hope you're right - in fact I hope we never have to find that out, specifically, but I'm not sure I share your optimism. If he does get back in for another term I suspect it'll make his first term look like a walk in the park, in many regards.

The point was made on twitter that, amusingly, if Putin totally pulled out of Ukraine and claimed victory his western Fanclub would 100pc say it was the right thing to do *and* agree he'd won.

From what we've seen, I think even without the US NATO would still destroy Russia's military. Especially now that their military capability is much reduced. That's the logic. Nobody will ever know if that was the idea.

The ICC head office is closed until 8AM Monday, so I don't think they'll be that bothered right now either ScotHill said:
I’ve not followed any of this at all but - if Putin had become ill and died of natural causes a number of years ago, would any of this happened? Or is there a cabal of similar mentalists who would have gone down the same path?
Tolstoy would have said yes - tides of history and so forth.I reckon no in the immediate sense . . . but if you go back 25 years and try to envisage what Russia would be like without him - well that’s so enormous it’s impossible to compute.
