The photo of "Putin" on the front page of the BBC looks a bit younger and more healthy looking than recent footage of Putin that I've seen.

So I agree. Good chance it isn't Putin.

I'm now at the point where I don't believe those claims at all. It's just good old tractor stats stuff, claiming enormous wins, ignoring losses, and not particularly tied to any actual success on the ground.

I noticed that all his bodyguards had their coats fully zipped up, which from what I've seen is unusual, given they need quick access to their weapons? Perhaps they know it's not Putin, so it doesn't matter what happens to him?

Oryx say they go through all the evidence and cross-check against what they already have. So, if you take their numbers as a base point and then allow for photographic evidence of a proportion not being available then that gives you something that would seem to indicate that the numbers the Ukrainians give are potentially exaggerated but not by multiples. On the other hand, so much of what the Russians say is garbage that any truth would slip through unnoticed.

Well, when he was doing the Stalingrad commemoration thing a little while back it was pointed out that, unlike previously, his bodyguards didn't have guns in case one of them took it upon themselves to do the world a favour.

If he is using doubles and one of the doubles gets taken out in public, I wonder what would happen? Does he go "that wasn't me, I'm fine" thus admitting using doubles and then having people wonder if it was really a double got killed or is it the double seeing an opportunity to take everything for themselves?

Are there many documented cases of doubles? There was Montgomery's bloke, and at least one Stalin, but I can't recall seeing anything else definitive.

Saddam Hussein springs to mind, but he's easy. A beret and a massive moustache and you're most the way there already.
