Looking at getting our house painted and the painter recommended Dulux weather shield but didn't specify trade or retail paint. The trade is way more expensive, like 4x the price, but has more pigment and apparently lasts longer.

Anyone know a good place to get it, or is it just not worth 4x the price?

Thanks!

Dulux Trade paint is so much better.
You get it from Dulux Trade Centres. There will be one hiding in an industrial estate somewhere close to you.
They will blend any colour you want.

Skilbuilder did a big thing about this a few years ago. They seemed to think the consumer and trade Dulux Masonry paint was exactly the same product and Dulux simply poured the consumer paint into Trade tubs and sold it for 3-4 times the price.

Dulux then invited them to the factory to bamboozle them with word salad and marketing guff and they left none the wiser.

Lasts better, seems to keep cleaner, better coverage, trade is slightly less expensive - but you really want whatever your decorator is proposing as you will want him to stand by the work.

If you phone Dulux they will explain all the differences and tell you all the places to get it mixed, they are really helpful, I spoke to them last week.

How old is your house? Does it need to breathe through the brickwork?

I used weathershield consumer grade to do mine last year, I found I needed 2 coats no matter what & can't see that using the trade stuff would have been any different in coating all the little divits in the render surface & the first coat getting lapped up, except for hitting my bank balance. Its still looking lovely and fresh & just has a couple of minor spots that need a bit of a scrub thanks to birds.
Maybe if i'm still here when it looks like it needs doing again i'll stump up for the trade stuff as hopefully it wouldn't soak in as much next time around.

You are correct. But all they are really doing is selling you the most expensive options.

Think it's something daft like £100+VAT now for the Trade Masonry, the consumer version is £40 and you get about 5sqm coverage per litre more with the trade one.

i'm going to go with dulux trade weathershield i think. I have found it for £49 for the mixed on demand stuff for 5L. From what i've read it is much better than retail. Painter says get 30L to start, and we can order more. Better than over order as you can't return it.

I've always painted the exterior render (roughcast) of our house - its a big old place with 23 timber sash windows to boot so it takes me around a month on and off all told

I'm now too old to be bothered/I have better things to do with my time so I've had 2 decorators around to give a price. I'm expecting at least 4-5k plus materials.

The reason for posting though was chap who came earlier today was raving about Weathertex masonry paint - reckons it's the best bar none so there is another option for those who are interested.

We are quite exposed so I'm going to spec pliolite paint for the stacks and some of the more exposed elevations in the hope it will last a bit longer.

No they did not do this at all , in fact after reading here its seems that the trade paint is better? but they talked about both and never said to me the trade one was better.
