I’m staying in Bristol overnight in June for an event nearby and I’m thinking of extending my stay by another day to have a look around.

I’ve been a few times but only to either the suburbs to see an old friend or in a hotel on the outskirts when I’m on the way to Cornwall, I can’t recall ever having been to actual Bristol.

So if I’m there for a day or two, what should I see? (Or avoid?)

Personally I’d find a nice hotel in the Clifton/Clifton Village area - it won’t be cheap but it’s probably the nicest base. Plenty of nice shops/places to eat/is quieter and good place to walk around (and spot old money cars in side streets and one of Chris Harris’ cars).

Failing that put yourself right in the centre by College Green/docks area as this is where the ‘action’ is. Personally I love walking around the docks down to the bridge area. Grab a beer and sit by the water if it’s nice.

SS Great Britain
Clifton suspension bridge

As above, I lived in Clifton for a couple of years and it's very much the Bristol equivalent of Highgate and Hampstead if you were comparing it to London, so a nice place to stay and not far from the centre of Bristol.

Cheddar gorge is doable if you have a car.

Aerospace Museum at Filton very interesting, really nicely laid out and modern museum that tells the story of aviation and aero engineering in Bristol. Not huge like Duxford but a good way to spend a couple of hours.

I’m cheap so I’ll be staying somewhere further out, probably in the triangle above Filton near the M5. I really struggle to convince myself to spend loads of money on just a bed for the night.

Clifton seems like a must.

I’ve stayed there a few times and found the rooms, although nice, are quite dark and some of the staff surly.

They also have one up by Clifton Suspension bridge but never stayed there personally.

In town:

I also really like Boca Bar - they do really good pizza and beers and it’s a lively place with a good vibe.

You also have the Left Handed Giant brewpub a few doors down if you like beer.

Should probably mention that I don’t drink, which might complicate things!

I could recommend the Donner kebabs from M&M in Whiteladies road, but probably not the destination the OP is looking for.
