Have the Junior Doctors now cancelled their planned strikes?

Have the new policeman arrived at the station to clock on?

Have all the new nurses arrived for their first day?

Have the boats stopped yet?

Of course I know it’s not going to happen today, but when will it happen?

6 months, 12 months or is it always going to be ‘we are trying but 14 years of Tory rule means we can’t actually do what we promised’

Then in 5 years another election and back to ‘vote for change’?
Christ the clowns have started early.
How about an answer rather than trying to be funny?

I'm not a clown nor a Labour hating Tory voter.

Mandelson has just been on R4 and made a very good point that they should get the difficult stuff done first and quickly.

If Labour are serious about their growth mantra, it will be so much hot air if they don't make immediate overtures in relation to joining a customs union. The EU negotiators were utterly exasperated with the antics of the Tories. Starmer will have no better opportunity to engage with the EU than the coming months.
This. Like any politician he will say anything to get votes but ultimately he was never a Brexiteer. He just has to deal with the consequences. Not having closer ties with the EU countries makes no economic sense. Even the likes of Rees-Mogg said it would take 30-50 years to see any benefits from Brexit; that needs to be accelerated somehow.

Given how long they were in power, then yeah, they can say that with justification. What they can't do is use it as an excuse for ever and ever. But anyone who thinks things will magically improve quickly is naive, given the state our country is in.

He will have a zero honeymoon period. The UK is in a parlous state and he needs to get cracking.

There is no 1997 war chest this time.

I think that’s exactly what people will expect. An immediate and visible improvement in their living standards, NHS, etc.

Today's social media driven population expect everything now.

The scary aspect for me is that the Tories have made such a balls up of everything that Starmer has manged to get to be PM without actually offering the electorate any firm policies or promises. He's managed to keep the hard left in check throughout the campaign, but surely they'll come crawling out from beneath their rocks now that they have a majority and make life very difficult for our new PM.

Agree. The work must begin straight away to start to sort out the mess.

It might be considered "hot air" to regard joining a customs union as a magic wand. For starters it doesn't cover trade in services where we have a trade surplus.

Secondly it means that third party countries have no need to have a FTA with the UK as their goods will automatically have access to the UK market via any agreement with the EU.

Let's all lighten up and try and get behind the new government. We know the issues - it's not going to fix itself overnight.

I, personally, want to see the re-nationalising of the railways and some hard action (if not re-nationalising) on the water companies in Labour's time.

I want to see a positive impact from the tax I pay - I don't even mind if it's a 'bit' more. I don't want to keep hearing about boat people as if they're the blame. I want to know that if my family or myself are diagnosed with a serious cancer, that we're seen to urgently.

I don't want to keep reading about scandals. I want to have faith in politics.

It will certainly be interesting to see how much grace he is given before the search for sleeze/scandal and general wrongdoing is stepped up by the media. I suspect it won't be long given the competitive nature of the media these days

How long do you think is a reasonable time after the new cabinet is formed for you ti start to see any of that happening?

So I definitely expect the rail nationalisation to happen in 2025 when contracts are up. That's a big checkpoint for me.

I'll expect the next Budget to be an opportunity to start seeing positive movement on tax and spending priority.

I guess in short therefore I'd give it 12 months to see some positive movements.

And if they don't do anything with/to the water companies in the next 12 months, then they won't do it at all.

Are you suggesting we afford him some slack in a way we wouldn’t if Tories won?
