I think the solicitor should have established vendor identity. Surely that's part of their remit.
When we bought and sold recently, despite us knowing our solicitor personally, we still had to turn up to their office with our birth certificates, passports and two utility bills.

They would have had to crime it as per NCRS. There's mens rea for someone knowingly taking title fraudulently and using fake Identity to gain a financial advantage.

There's nothing civil about it. So if it wasn't crimed and investigated properly then the Minister could go to the IOPC over it.
Maybe they were involved, I was busy when programme was on so may have missed the exact detail. What I did pick up is that it has definitely been adjudicated that the initial police response was wrong in law.

And this is what is fishy. There's clear fraud on at least the person who took title and then allegedly sold the house...

Did they really sell it? What ID was used etc.

Sure. I'm selling my mum's house right now and had to do the same (family solicitor!) as well as copies of financial POA.

If there was no mortgage its probably quite easy to do with a fake ID.

Make me wonder if its worth having a small mortgage as they would have a charge over the property and provide an extra hurdle.
As I'm sure you know you can set up email alerts from the Land Registry that will flag any activity on a property title.
This is exactly what I have done...slightly more paranoid/OCD so setup the alerts and every 6 months receive a notification to confirm there has been no activity.
However that assumes the control and checks the registry perform are actually effective......questionable but at least provides some comfort.

I bought and sold recently, and the solicitor verified my identity via an APP!

Same here but the App was checking the chip in my passport so that is difficult to fake.

^^^^Agree, and a must for all residential landlords to do.

Hmm an app wasn't even mentioned to me. Not sure I'd have been completely happy with a solicitor who settled for a single point of verification (isn't that how fraudsters get in?)
