Loose door mirror - ??? Help please!
Discussion
I tried but it seems impossible to get to it, you cannot move the plastic collar out the way enough to get to the screw.
I took it into Leven, and it cost about £80 to do. The way to do it is remove the mirror from the car, tighten on a bench then refit it.
Don't know of any way of doing it on the car, despite what the bible says.

It seems that on some cars it's possible to reach the grubscrew and get an allen key in it. But I know, both from other posts and from experience that it's NOT the case with all cars.
The entire mirror assembly is put together off the car and then screwed into the door. When starting from scratch this involves fitting and removing it repeatedly and adjusting the viewing angle via the grubscrew with the assembly off the car.
You may need to to dismantle the door connector. I don't know about earlier cars but the connector block on the later cars does not fit through the boss in the door.
If it is the grubscrew that's loose I'm not sure how you'll be able to remove the assembly without damaging part of it, so good luck!

Thanks for your help guys. When it happened I took the speaker off and had a feel around only to find there is just fibreglass and a hole. Having got home and checked the bible i can see there is a tork screw so will try that at the weekend. I guess they used a jig at the factory which ment they could set it up before putting on th car....and the door trim would have been off....tried removing that some time ago and gave up ...
Will post any findings when i have a go tomorrow eve......

Andy, please find a quick breakdown posted from the TVRCC on how I did mine.

The door mirror is connected to the car via a nut which is fibre glassed into the door itself (shot 1 & 2) and then the collar is screwed into the nut (shot 3) with the tripob (which has the grub screw) connected to the collar.(shot 4)
Shot 1 - Boss
Shot 2 - Boss
Shot 3 - Collar
Shot 4 - Tripod
Shot 5 - Internal frame, Tripod and Collar
Shot 6 - All items
The best way I found was to -
1 - Cover door with something to protect the paintwork (old chammis or sweatshirt)
2 - Remove drivers door speaker.
3 - Disconnect cable connectors for mirror electrics.
4 - Remove mirror glass.
5 - Unscrew the 3 screws to remove front part (painted) of mirror housing & rotate out of the way so you can see the hole going through the door.
6 - Lift up the black plastic cover to give better access.
7 - Feed cables from inside through the hole and tripob. (can be a pain as the plugs are large but do them 1 at a time and they will fit)
At this point you should be able to tell if it's the grub screw which is loose or the screw which goes through from inside the tripod up into the internal frame, or even worse a broken tripod or internal frame. (shown below, 'god damn monkey metal')
8 - Take a large flat headed screw driver and stick it into on of the flat recesses of the collar as can be see in shots 3 & 4, and unscrew the hole wing mirror as one unit. (be careful not to twist the cables to much)
9 - Once removed, disassmble the unit so you end up with the collar and tripod as seperate items.
10 - Screw the collar back into the door and tighten using the flat headeed screw driver.
11 - Offer up the tripod and mark the position of the grub screw on the collar with a marker pen.
12 - Remove the collar again and once removed screw the tripod onto the collar so the grub screw is lined up with the mark. This way you know it is lineed up correctly and done up tight, be careful though, the tripods aren't the greatest.
13 - Put the black collar over the tripod & collar and rescrew the mirror hosing back onto the tripod so it is lined up with the tripod as in shot 5.
14 - Smear some silicon on the bottom of the collar so it gives it a better seal when fitted back to the door.
15 - Feed cables back through tripod and hole in door and screw the unit back onto the car. (check the cables every now and again to make sure they don't twist to much)
16 - Tighten back up using the screw driver into the slots. (be careful not to break the tripod)
17 - Check alignment of mirror
18 - Refit front of mirror housing and glass.
19 - IMPORTANT - Reconnect the cable connectors for the door mirror but check for correct routing. I didn't the first time and when I lowered the drivers window it kindly cut them off inside the door,
20 - Refit speaker and Voila, job done.
All in all it took about 1.5 - 2 hrs unless you cut your cables off with the window and it goes up to about 4 hours, but don't let this put you off, it all good experiance, and next time you do it it'll take you half the time, (promis) If you lived closer I'd even give you a hand.
Have fun.

Hoping someone on here can help - I have the dreaded loose door mirror problem.
So far, I have managed to remove the mirror glass and unscrew the mirror housing back. I can pull that out of the way and can see the collar through the tripod. However, as my grub screw is loose, I now need to somehow unscrew the collar from the nut that is bonded in the door.
I can’t see anyway of getting any rotational force around this to unscrew this. Am I missing something?
I’ve bought the kit that contains the new extended collar so in the future I should be able to get to the grub screw without having to take the mirror off……

With the back plastic section loose, the mirror glass off, the front plastic section removed and all electrics disconnected you can rotate the remaining mirror components to unscrew the old boss from the door
I suspect this has already been tried but with the background thought of not wanting to break something. However, this is the only remaining option.
You need to grip it in such a way that you don't break the tripod and hope the boss either come loose or the grub screw is loose enough that you can rotate to a position where you can release the grub completely. A cut down Allen key has to be your first move.
Good luck

Getting access to the boss is very difficult - even after removing the glass and loosening the back plastic section, there is very limited access to the boss
.
I’ll have another go this weekend otherwise a trip to my friendly TVR garage I think!
