Ban accuses both sides of abuses in Syria

UNITED NATIONS – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon accused both the Syrian government and the opposition of large-scale human rights violations, including torturing and reportedly executing prisoners and failing to protect civilians fleeing the war-ravaged country in record numbers.
In an address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Mr Ban demanded that those responsible for violating international humanitarian and human rights laws be held accountable.
“Prisoners on both sides are subject to harsh treatment and, often, torture,” he said. “There have been alarming reports of summary executions on both sides.”
He added: “Government forces and the armed opposition have clearly failed to protect civilians and respect the rules of international humanitarian law.”

PARIS (Reuters) - Foreign Islamists intent on turning Syria into an autocratic theocracy have swollen the ranks of rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad and think they are waging a "holy war", a French surgeon who treated fighters in Aleppo has said.
Jacques Beres, co-founder of medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres, returned from Syria on Friday evening after spending two weeks working clandestinely in a hospital in the besieged northern Syrian city.

In an interview with Reuters in his central Paris apartment on Saturday, the 71-year-old said that contrary to his previous visits to Homs and Idlib earlier this year about 60 percent of those he had treated this time had been rebel fighters and that at least half of them had been non-Syrian.
"It's really something strange to see. They are directly saying that they aren't interested in Bashar al-Assad's fall, but are thinking about how to take power afterwards and set up an Islamic state with sharia law to become part of the world Emirate," the doctor said.

On her 11-day Asia trip, Clinton sought to push for more forceful international steps on Syria, greater unity over Iran's nuclear program and a multilateral mechanism for China to deal with maritime territorial disputes with its Southeast Asian neighbors.
But she appeared to gain little traction with either the Chinese and Russian leadership, both of which restated their firm opposition to what they see as US meddling.
"Our US partners prefer measures like threats, increased pressure and new sanctions against both Syria and Iran. We do not agree with this in principle," Russia's Lavrov told reporters after his talks with Clinton on Saturday.

A tragedy of course, but when the same thing happened in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Libya, etc it was assumed accepted collateral. When Blair and the Israeli administration are charged with war crimes I may reconsider my position.What you need to know about Syria today

I'm afraid I follow a few too many blogs and may of missed a recent speech by him.
I'm a supporter of the HRW org and their work.
One item that has received little comment by most people is that while atrocities have undoubtedly been committed by both sides in the Syrian conflict few want to admit that by far the largest number have been committed by the Assad regime.
Why are people afraid of admitting?

I am in no position to admit anything as I don't know and I am not willing to believe a word of either side as they both have interest in deception.

Really where do you get this from? Would that be the free syrian blog you linked to and suggested a look at? The website that will take anything anti Assad as gospel. I look at evidence rather than hearsay. Evidence regardless of claims made by any organisation tend to indicate that the greatest atrocities have been by the Free Syrian Rebels.Is it one of his speeches at HRW?

Hi Pesty,
Re Jacques Beres comments in the Chicago Tribune.
If correct then of course it's worrying and I wonder if other parts of Syria are suffering the same.
I think that if assad falls then there's going to be problems between the Syrian and many of the foreign fighters, much like in other parts of N. Africa and the ME.
Only time will tell.
