My Asda Credit Card is being closed down in January (all of them, not just me!) and I need to find a new one.

I used to like it as when I first got it I got 2p a litre off fuel at Asda and also cashback in the form of store vouchers each Christmas which bought me some tipples for the festive season.

My biggest regular spend is fuel, but I do use the card for any other big purchases and I pay it off each month in full.

Anyone got any advice about which one may be best? I was thinking of hhonors Visa as I'm already in hhonors and have accumulated a lot of points this year, however, my business travel stops early next year so maybe that's pointless.

I'm not interested in the interest rate as I never use it to borrow long term, I'd like maximum rewards though. smile

Any advice?

P.S. In case anyone wonders why I want a card at all if I always pay it off, it's purely to assist with cashflow, if I have a big sudden purchase it gives me time to move money into my current account to pay the card off. It's also essential at hotels etc. who want to swipe it generally.

My Nat west costs me £200 a year but last year we had a divertor valve replaced on the CH, last month they came out to fix a gas leak that included new valves. They have also helped with a water leak 2 years ago plus we get green flag breakdown, travel insurance, a brilliant concierge service that I've only used twice but was brilliant when we did.

Plus you get points on spend seems to be about 2.3%

Oh and airport povo lounge but better than nothing

Wouldn't be without it.

Don't a lot of people not take Amex, I know a good few little stores didn't?

I used to have an AMEX company card and it was a nightmare, nobody took it. Always had to ask in advance if they took it when going out somewhere.

There is also a Barclaycard cashback card that I seen something about just today

Looks like an alternative worth looking at

+1. I use my platinum cashback for everything I can. The first £2k spend in a year (less in the first year) the cashback covers the card fee, after that the rest is profit.

Only downside is a fair few small retailers (esp. in the uk) don't accept Amex - so you need a visa/MasterCard backup (I just use my current account debit card). I find most of my spending is with big places that accept it though, so not a major inconvenience.

I suggest Capital One with up to 1.25% cashback. Used to be 5% up to max £200 for first 100 days, but don't know if they're still doing that.

Thanks for all the advice guys. In the end I have applied for an Aqua reward card-

http://www.aquacard.co.uk/

3% cashback on everything and no annual fee. The only problem being that it doesn't give a particularly good credit limit (I only got £500 which is tiny but more than enough to cover all my petrol etc)

It appears to be a card aimed at people who need to build a credit history but I'm going to give it a try anyway, if I find the need for a bigger limit I'll go with my bank for a standard credit card for emergency use etc.

Actually just realised that one thing I missed is that the cashback limit on the Aqua card is £100 per year, so actually, I can pretty much only use it to cover my petrol bills otherwise I'll just exceed the limit anyway. frown

Ho hum, I'll get a different card in a couple of months (don't want to run another search on my credit file so quickly!) that should attract a bigger limit for my more expensive purchases, definitely going to give the cards with an annual fee a miss though, I just don't think it would be worth it for me.
