If you trade on margin and the exchange gets hacked where do you stand with that?

You'll be toast just like everyone else.

If you mean if the exchange has a massive glitch or briefly shuts and then reopens for business then you're often liquidated with zero compensation or recourse.

Other times they show some mercy. It varies a great deal.

Poloniex allowed a massive stcoin liquidation recently that wiped out millions of dollars of lender money. They made a nominal effort to pay them back and now seem to be hoping people forget about it.

Worthy of a bump. Bitcoin cracking $10k and other coins/tokens have been having a good few weeks - especially Ethereum.

I don't think there's any huge development in Crypto lately to justify the increase, I saw some mention of JP Morgan looking to do something with Ethereum. Coronavirus might help Bitcoin. Or there's the obvious market manipulation and it's going to dump about 30% any day hehe

given that this thread has been going for three years and 99% has be concerned with making money on speculation and the recent history of blockchaim seems to be on of spectacular boom/bust and grand thefts and frauds

what is the actual point of it all.

Is this question restricted to bitcoin or is it a general musing on the game of life?

good question.

I think I mean blockchaims currencies with no state backing.

what traction have they got. are they just speculators wet dream or a real shift in the way we think of money?

Changes with the wind. Digital gold, lightning network (that was a success, not), money away from banks whilst at the same time hopefing the banks invest in it, secure payments.

But it boils down to the payment being used on the dark web to buy whatever it is pedalling, whilst everyone else speculates on it being the next big thing..

It's a hobby to have a go with. A money making hobby, . Where you can also lose money. A gamble. A casino. It can be fun.
Everyone is so concerned about what it is. I have no real answers.

I had the w@nking blackmail email scam the other week and the scammer wanted paying to his bitcoin address which he supplied. Is there anything I can do with this info? Anyone to give it to so they can give him a visit with a red hot poker type of thing? Or is it useless to anyone but the scammer?

Genuine interest BTW, I know next to nowt about BTC and how it works, and no I didn't pay him.

Isn't that kind of the point of it? Unless he posts some personal data next to his wallet then there probably isn't much you can do.

I don't know if a trawl on the dark web would help in any way.

The advice here is well put together: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/askjack/201...

If you're curious about how successful the phish is (assuming their spam has reused the same address for each email) then you can see how much they've amassed. Just paste their Bitcoin address into here: https://blockstream.info/

If the crims have reused addresses, their activities can be tracked & it's quite likely they'll slip up at some point & be located eventually.

Alternatively he/they are not totally brain-dead & have used a different address for each email. That makes it rather more difficult for investigators to knit it all together.

The bit that I bought was with the remnants of my BCH holding that I got from the fork that I was changing to BTC / cashing out. It is nothing to get too excited about.... yet?!? In fiat terms it was £241.97 (~£2.29 per LINK), today it is £362.22 (£3.44 per LINK), which is a 49.7% 'profit' in 7 months

In a move that will do little to reduce the polarisation of opinion on bitcoin, here is Max Keiser talking about his price target for bitcoin. He is talking with Alex Jones on infowars

Back in 2011 Keiser first started talking about $100k / BTC and was urging people to buy at ~$1

As of now, he has raised that to $400k / BTC

There is a video embedded in this page and Keiser's bit starts at 12'30" https://bitcoinist.com/alex-jones-finally-becomes-...

Sounds like AIM!

"Wouldn't be out of this for long/over the weekend!"
"It's going to the moon!"

To The Moon is the name of a series of 10 programmes that Keiser did about bitcoin / blockchain

https://www.rt.com/shows/to-the-moon/

He is one of the most bullish bitcoin commentators out there, has been for a long time now

That said, not many of his followers that bought BTC for <$5 back in 2011 or so, are complaining
