So driving around my old working/middle class neighbourhood and bumped into a friend who has bought a Pagani Huyara! Conversation went along the lines of nice to see you what are you doing around here? He pointed to his parents 3 bed semi and said thats where I live! Tickled me that his car is worth two to three times what their house is worth and gave him a fair bit of stick for it and also for living with his parents in his 30s.

Drove up the road a bit same thing. Lambo H Spyder parked outside another 3 bed semi. Further down the road another 3 bed semi with a 488 GTB and SQ7. WTF!

Made me chuckle that their cars are so important to them and there's me driving around in my old banger smile

That's how you take 'keeping up with the Jones' to nuclear levels.

You can sleep in a car, but you can't race a house.

Single, can't get a mortgage, take out a massive PCP instead. It's not unheard of.

Personally I'd be wanting to get a deposit together to get my own place but everyone has different priorities!

I love cars but have never even considered getting a car with a monthly payment larger than an average mortgage.

Its just stupid to buy into such and expensive depreciating asset like that before you have even got yourself a home IMO.

Please don't hit me with the racist card as it's not meant in a derogatory fashion, but is this a cultural thing in the sense that it is an south Asian/Pakistani demographic that you saw this in?

No idea for sure as your post gives no indication of either area or backgrounds?

I know that staying at home with the family is fairly normal in this community as are flashy cars.

British Indian, British Sri Lankan and British Pakistani. Relatively wealthy so would not surprise me if cars not on tick. If you'd told me 30 years ago that we'd see cars like this in my old neighbourhood I'd have said you're barking.

I'm also a British Asian and lasted about 2 weeks at home after my 18th and moved out but maybe there's something to what you're saying - I still find it very strange as we've all been bought up here wink

Don't worry, we'll both get hit with it as that's my guess too.

I remember reading an article in something like Autocar years ago about a bloke who lived in what I am assuming was a council flat who had a 308 in the lock up garage behind the flats....massive respect as I think it was bought and paid for and his choice where he puts his money. When it's a Lambo bought on finance or some such I am just lost for words.

The monthlies on those two could easily be more than the mortgage payment confused

That's madness... but each to their own.

My cars are worth more than my house, never been into houses really.

I could buy a house 3 x the price I guess but don't see the point.

I plan to use my house as part of my retirement fund so its important to me. Its probably the only thing I own that will be worth more than I paid for it in 20 years time so hoping it works for me. biggrin

Maybe they have paid off the mortgage and are now spending disposable income on cars. They like the house and don't want to move.

Not that it's really any of our business!
