We all know the stock answer, but I have driven the following.
60mph limit, street lights at a junction/roundabout, so 60 repeaters on lamp posts.
40mph limit, street lights at junction, no repeaters on lamp posts which extended some way, but 40 repeaters (not full size numbers) after street lights.
Any other confusing contradictions?

You'll often see ( if you can be bothered noticing) open roads with street lights no repeaters but 60

On the other hand you'll get caught out on open roads with streetlights no repeaters where there's a 30 each end you havent noticed

If there are street lights and no repeaters, you should assume it's a 30. Because you can make that assumption, there's actually no need for repeaters in a 30.

Exactly this - it was repeated over and over at the AA speed awareness course I attended a couple of years back

Too obvious coffee

If you do you'll risk being bumped up the back by someone doing more than 60

This is taken from the last streetlight. The road ahead is a 30mph limit. It has no signs or street lighting.

Where there are streetlights it is correct to assume a 30mph limit in the absence of any signage but on roads like this it is not so easy to decide. Probably explains the frequent speed traps about a mile down this road.

Yes that was there in 2010, not a legal sign and has been removed since. There are no signs at present.

I have been through many 40 and 50 mph road works with temporary, sandbag-held red-ringed signs, but the usual permanent NSL black diagonal signs are still in place.

Yep. Same here. Was chatting to my local friendly plod about the annoying temporary roadworks who advised me that the local 60 which was down to a red ringed temporary 30 because of construction, was actually still a 60 because there was 1 60 sign still on show. Thank You VERY Much Mr Officer!

Personally, I don't think the old adage of street lights = 30 is right anymore as there's plenty of 20 zones where you have a sign on entry but no reminder as you drive through.

20 zones are not the same as 20 limits wink

The A6 between Preston and Lancaster has had all the NSL bits cut to 50mph. However, one NSL sign has been forgotten and left up.

A 50mph sign was stuck over the NSL sign here and almost immediately scraped off a long time ago. It's never been replaced.

Only recently have 50mph signs been put at the bottom of this road. Previously, the first 50mph sign you passed was a small repeater type sign much further up. If you'd joined the road from another 50mph road leading onto the roundabout, your limit was 50mph until the small sign. If you'd come off the motorway, it was 60mph. The new signs were only set up as average speed cameras were put along the road.

At the other end of the road there's a short stretch of NSL on the Bolton side of the boundary as Bolton Council didn't cut the limit from NSL to 50mph when Blackburn With Darwen Council did. The NSL is signed coming out of Bolton and then you reach 50mph signs at the Blackburn With Darwen boundary. Going the other way there are no NSL signs on the boundary to mark the short NSL stretch. It makes the limit 50mph towards Bolton but NSL away from it.

A 20mph zone is supposed to be self enforcing with traffic calming measures.

Limits use signage only, without the word "Zone" under it.

So technically if I can drive through a 20 'zone' at 60 then that's cool? But if it was a 20 limit then that's not cool.

Was round here recently and noticed a lot of this. There was on in Scotland that has lights appear, no signs at all, then 800 yards later a 30 countdown appears!

If there are street lights and no repeaters, you should assume it's a 30. Because you can make that assumption, there's actually no need for repeaters in a 30.
So this is 30mph once you arrive at the lit section?

(I'll give you a clue - it's not).

No, because a 20 Zone will more than likely be within a 30 limit

Technically, speedometers do not have to be accurate below 40kph (about 24mph).
I have seen many black-ringed 20 signed zones.
