I have triban 100 bike from Decathlon with one ring in the front. I want to buy cheap front road shifter sl-a050 which is only for 2 rings. I can buy then double ring crank and front derailleur. The problem is that I want cheap bike for riding 17 km to work and I noticed that cheapest front tourney double derailleur is for price like almost 20 dollars in Poland and triple is for less than 10. I don't know why. So i thought that maybe triple front derailleur can work with double chainring and double shifter I want to change it mainly because there is one ring on triban bike and chain drops on bumps all the time because of lack of derailleur. I thought that I can have chain dropping fixed and gain new gears. Do you think that I can buy cheap triple front derailleur or I should pay for two times more expensive double?

Triple front mech unlikely to work as the profile and shape of the mech are different to a double mech, I've tried and failed using a 105 (5700) double shifter with a 5703 front triple shifter.

I would like to add that i want to use it with 7 speed casette, as i know sprockets are the same wide as 8 speed but just one less. Someone told me that it should work, i just need to adjust range of front derailleur corrctly but i'm not sure now. I have one front ring in drivetrain for now but it is just cheap Triban 100 gravel bike from decathlon. The chain from front sprocket drops all the time when i am hitting bigger bump on the road because there is no derailleur cage. I ride 17 km to work and i need to go partly through some forest path and it usually drops about 2 times. I think that i can also mount some cheap front derailleur for single ring in order to prevent chain from falling. There already is some chain protector attached to the frame which is just a little piece of plastic but it doesn't help much. Chain drops inside. I don't really need more gears but i thought that i can prevent chain from falling and have more gears in the same time. In the future i want to replace rear freehub with casette 7 speed because these cheap road shifters allow only 7 speed although it is enough for me. Then i need to do also something with this chain dropping but im just wondering what would be best.

If you want to keep the single ring set up, then all you need is a Dog Fang chain catcher to stop the chain dropping off on the inside. Search eBay for one, they don't cost much.

Slawek, I have lods of front derailleurs in the parts bin. Message me your address and I will send you one in the post from Germany. I will need the diameter of the seat tube if you have a Vernier caliper.

Cheers, Simon

Barchettaman I really appreciate it that you can send me front derailleur although i just reminded to myself that i have somewhere in my house where i used to live before an old bike that was bough for my first communion more than 10 years ago and it has some front shifter. I'm just wondering if it will fit but i noticed that frame in this place can be in 2 sizes: a bigger diameter and smaller one. I have smaller one in my triban 100 so i think it should fit. If it is bigger then i will just wrap something around pipe. I need to look at it and check if it can work.

There is already the same thing as on this picture in link below but it doesn't work. I think it is too far, the closest to chain i can make it is maybe almost half centimeter away from chain, it is just too short, maybe it helps a little but not much, chain drops anyway. This piece of plastic was there from beggining but ring seems to be too far from it.

Have you checked that the chain isn't too long? Might be worth taking a couple links out.
Other options could be narrow wide chainring or clutch derailleur.

You can buy a complete used 9 speed groupset on ebay for about £45. I got one last month. Crank, mechs, shifters, brakes too. You'd need a new back wheel too but they're cheap as chips as long as you're not too fussy.

Or fit a chain catcher, loose a link and see if you can pull the rear mech apart and clock the spring round a notch to increase the tension.
