I draw PAYE of £7200 from one business and £4800 form another, and have done so for a several years now.

Normally HMRC allocate £7800 of my personal allowance to PAYE one, and the balance to PAYE two.

This year, HMRC in their infinite wisdom have decided to allocate my personal allowance equally between the two PAYE's.

My overall liability won't change of course, it's just how they get paid it.

Phone them and tell them the split you want. They will change it for you.

If you have half an hour or more to waste on a phone call?

The Tax Code notification mentions an online method I think, so I'm going to have a go at that next week.

It's just bloody annoying that I have to and they can't use my income to make a logical allocation.

HMRC expects taxpayers to take charge of their own tax affairs. This is their new "digital"! thinking in action. You are all going to have to get used to it.

Well yes, passing the buck that a very simple computer programme would solve.

You say do they have any sense, probably not.

I received a note in the post in December about my tax liability for 2014, THREE YEARS AGO.

Said I owed £475.00 and although noted I paid that amount in 2014, but WOULDNT BE TAKING THAT INTO ACCOUNT, WTF.

I wrote to them, guy called and basically said he had no idea what they were on about, and to ignore it.

I tried that myself as my tax code was quite a way off what it should have been, it just takes you through what they think your tax code should be and why but couldn't find a way to notify them as to why it was wrong only a way to indicate specific changes in circumstances e.g. stopped taking child benefit payments.

As I hate speaking to people on the phone I just wrote them a letter dictating what I had worked out that my tax code should be and could they recalculate themselves accordingly. Few weeks later I get an email notification that a change has been made, log into self assessment thingy and lo and behold they've set my tax code to exactly what I told them it should be! I hope I'm right!

No, had issues recently was getting letters saying I was due x amount paid that and got another with a different amount so paid that also.

Got another letter so phoned them turns out I was in credit and there computer system doesn’t allocate payments to older balances they person had to do it manually.

I managed to find they way to notify them online, but they certainly don't make it simple to find.

In answer to your original question:

As an Accountant, no, they're f***ing useless.

Glad you got it sorted.

Slightly off topic, but I do find the incompetence of HMRC pretty alarming.

Must be very simple to get away with paying less tax than you should if you're that way inclined. There's a lot in the press about tax avoidance schemes, but I bet HMRC misses out on billions of revenue from regualr folks by being totally useless.

I always wonder if it is balanced out by people who are paying way too much tax but are not aware of how to legally reduce their tax liabilities and don't take advice from an accountant.

Shocking, aren't they? I'm currently being bombarded by letters and emails telling me I've underpaid PAYE for month 8 and I'm being charged interest and threatened with penalties. Despite having paid what's owed on time and with the FPS submitted on time they've allocated month 8's payment to month 9 which shows as an overpayment on my account. So, all in all, I owe nothing.

Submit an EPS to correct the position is what the website tells me (and your account will be updated the following day) - well no it won't as I've now submitted 3 x EPS in the last 10 days, none of which have had any effect. I tried ring yesterday and, after three minutes of listening to automated rubbish, they concluded by telling me they were very busy and to call back another time at which point they hung up.

I once had a rebate, that I didn't agree with...............then the same amount was said not to have been paid a month or so later, with the accompanying threatening letters.

Bunch of fking muppets in my experience.

They once disagreed severely with me - and sent me several letters over a few weeks, all of different amounts for the same period.

I mean, I think they were wanting me to just give them something, and not worry about it. The top amount to the bottom amount different was over 10k.

Also as an accountant, I fully agree. Just wait for the MTD catastrophe next year...
