My driving licence valid date is showing until 9 Jan 2019. Do I have to pay to get a new one or do you get one sent automatically?

Pay 14 quid. Spend 10 mins filling in an online form, get new photocard in 2 weeks.

You have got a valid passport haven't you?

When mine was close to expiring, my local main post office has a booth that they take the photos in and the do the form there and then for you. The new card just turned up in the post soon after.

A word of warning to anybody, you don't get a warning that it's expiring.

I renewed mine a few months ago, no need to go to the post office or anywhere else for that matter for a picture to be taken, as the latest version of the website allows you to take your own picture on a smartphone, you upload it, it checks that the picture is acceptable (not as easy as you would think, as you can't have obvious shadows etc.. in the picture) and away you go.. it can all be done online in about 10 minutes..

My replacement turned up within a week.. As others have said though, you don't get any reminders to say it is about to expire

It has built in Obsolescence like many things.

The day after it expires, you will see a film start to peel away and disintegrate. Within a week, the platic degrades to a point where you cannot see your face in it and if it lasts a month, there is a tiny bit of potassium in it which when the plastic degrades gets exposed to the air and then burns the licence.

Or maybe not wink

I got a reminder in the post at the end of last week.

I've just gone through the online renewal and they ask for a valid passport number so they can use your passport photo.

My passport is valid for another year (i.e. it's about 10 months younger than my photocard) and the picture I used on my passport was from the same strip of photos I used on my photocard licence. I'm waiting to see if they actually check the photos or if it's a fully automated procedure and I've just paid 14 quid to have the date altered......

If you do not renew it, any vehicles registered in your name will turn in to pumpkins at midnight.

Do you have to get a new photograph done, or can you use the current? Are you saying it's possible to renew in person rather than online?

I'd like to thank you for replying. Things that are rarely done are always vague.

You don't have to "upgrade" to a photo one but it will still require renewal at 70

You'd possibly be surprised at how many used to turn up at the dealer I used to work at, expecting to take a pre-booked courtesy car, then hand over an expired license when doing the usual checks.

Had quite a lot of people get aggressive and abusive about it. One was a HGV driver, who should have known better.

Not one seemed to appreciate that an expired license was an expired license - they wouldn't be insured, if the worst occurred, and would get a heavy fine if they were stopped.

Luckily I didn't have to work on a service desk for long, but this was just one of the many, many, examples of things you'd get blamed for by neglectful people.
