I'm off between now and christmas so decided to have a bit of a clear out of some items i'm no longer using. Probably 10 ish items, listed on Facebook at between £10-30. All gadgets or blu rays.

On at least two of the items, and by several people i've been asked "Have you the box for this item as i want it for a Christmas present?"

Whilst the items are mint, i did find that a little odd that people would give a second hand item as a present?

Anyone else come across this?

I don’t see why not, you get something that might otherwise fall outside your spend limit, it’s just not new. eBay shows there’s plenty of market for second hand goods, I see no reason why they can’t be presents.

No issues whatsoever. I often get thing for and from my mam, I'd often see something in an antique shop or a charity shop window and think she'd love that. Some people have a stigma against it. Often the real value is in pre-owned. Very similar to buying cars, very little use over a year can often knock 90% of the value off something. My mrs bought me a wheel set for the Xbox this year. New was 250 quid. In box, with original receipt for 60 quid. No less happy and nobody is wasting needlessly.

What cars are you buying that are 12mths old and have lost 90% of their value??!!

Personally I wouldn’t gift anything that isn’t new - what if it’s not the right item, wrong size, faulty, counterfeit, has unseen damage - at least there’s recourse from a store or website

I guess it’s the same as regifting a little bit, a phenomenon the wife introduced me to.

Yes to second hand presents. I bought my friend an old 306 GTI brochure off eBay one Christmas as he used to own one and was very fond of it.

One of the gift's I've got for my mrs is 2nd hand. It's a struggle to buy brand new antiques.

Even if it was loo roll? Or a pair of undercrackers perhaps?

We've bought our three year old a 2nd hand portable DVD player. If he decides to put lego in the DVD tray or spills a drink on it, it's better to have lost £30 rather than £100.

When I sold a PS4 recently, one of the interested people wanted it with the box so they could pass it off as a new one for a Christmas present. If I was given a PS4, I wouldn't care if it was new or second hand.

Depends on the gift. I've given and received plenty of used books, but wouldn't give used socks.

When I were a lad...times were hard not like now.... 2nd hand Christmas presents were not unusual.

I think it's great.

Far too much new useless stuff been given to folk, just for the sake of been seen to give presents. 90% of our sons presents are never touched as they do not interest him

So they are either ebayed or re-wrapped ready for someone else. Got a whole cupboard full of untouched presents awaiting a suitable person.
Appeals to my northern sensibilities. smile

My most treasured possessions are second hand, mostly given as gifts by my O/H, family or friends.

Same. My parents didn’t have money for frivolous items but I still remember opening my nintendo 64 that was in a plain brown box.

I was just as happy. I still have it.

I suppose with some old school retro electronics it makes sense.
