So I just watched this clip:

https://youtu.be/a2qxaUyJj1E

..and it got me wondering, can you go faster than an M5 for under £25k and would you want to?

To clarify the last statement I mean if you buy a Ford mondeo and tune it to 900hp is it really going to cost less than the F10 M5 over 12months and 10,000 miles of running? My own experiences of highly modified cars suggest not.

I imagine a finance companies algorithm would agree.

K series Caterham Superlights are fast and probably within budget.

As nice as the V10 sounds I don't think it would be enough against an F10 M5. You'll want something with forced induction I think, bigger gains.

Could you supercharge a C63 reliably?

I would take the Caterham for a track only car any day and will definitely be quicker after 3 laps when the M5's brakes are on fire but for outright pace, based on this comparison (2 min onwards) with the M1 (which I suspect would have been last in that Autocar drag race)

I'm not sure.

Drop a couple of wheels and you could do it for £5k easily...

Googling these suggestions is a great waste of an afternoon but sadly M5 still king of the hill so far.

Ok. That can't be argued. Can't say it's an equivalent mode of transport but faster, more thrilling.. ok you win on that one.

How about a W211 E55 AMG with a smaller pulley and remap. No more than 15k in for a good one.

I was going to suggest that 900HP in a Mondeo would be impossible...but then I considered that the 2.5T is essentially the same as the Focus RS, or at least close enough that the RS block should fit and there are reports of >900hp on those!

I don't see the point though, it's FWD and while I'm not one to blanket state RWD good, FWD bad that's *way* too much power for the front wheels alone to handle. Same issue with pretty much anything else that isn't already pretty expensive, they're all fwd.

By the time you've actually modified it enough to put that power down you'd have been better off just going for an entire drive train conversion with a bigger (but more "stock") engine to start with.

Stick an LS in with a suitable gearbox and rwd setup (should be plenty of room) and *yes* you could do it and it'd be *more* reliable than an M5 (as they're hardly the bastion of reliability) .

surely 25k is more than enough money to buy a supra or skyline and tune up to 700hp+

A bike engined Mini would do the biz, I'm not sure it's an particularly attractive everyday prospect, however! hehe

You're only going to get 550bhp at the most and with a very slow gearbox. Mine was 5222bhp with remap and pulley.

yes Even stage 1 with a Miltek is over 700BHP and will embarrass most supercars from the lights.

ETA: Less than 20k in PH classifieds for a tuned model eek

C7 RS6 is a 5.2V10 Bi turbo engine it’s torque is flat (so not stressed at all = massive gains)
