Quick update as I can't get the URLs for the photos I uploaded until tonight.

The roof is pretty much complete, subject to anything the roofer asks the chippy for today. All the valley boards are on for the valley gutters, including the massive one down the middle of the two hips which is more like a walk on waterfall.

A piece of steel and plate has been made up to support the wall which overhangs into the bedroom, that's up, fixed and will have a weld for luck today.

The bricky is back today to build said piece of brickwork and to take the chimney through the soffit level. The soffits and fascias should be going on today, they are both black ash.

I spent the whole of the weekend up on the roof, every single tile is now off, stacked and have the nails drilled out of them, about 1,500 had to be drilled! Every batten is also off and disposed of. The roofers are here on Wednesday to get all the battens and membrane on. Because of all the funny angles I would much rather get them to put those on and allow us to load the tiles on ourselves.

The front face has all the battens and membrane on, the rest is continuing today, probably 3-4 days in total to do that. The soffits and fascias are almost all done and may be finished by the end of today. Just a shame I can't get onto Facebook at work to share the images with you at the moment.

Right, well I'm finally home so I'll post some photos in order.

These are from last weekend when I spent god knows how many hours up there removing every tile, drilling the nails out, stacking them up and removing all the battens.

Drilling station to drill out all the nails that were corroded into the tiles!

The steel plate used to support the wall.

We then have these ones from tonight, apologies for the pics but it's now getting very dark when I get home from work!

Slightly better shot of the fascia boards here:

All the membrane and batten work will be finished tomorrow and the lead has been ordered so all the lead work will be done on Tuesday-Wednesday, then the tiles can start going back on!

I'm now off to order the guttering and downpipes!

Stupid question but is the only thing between the tiles and the trusses the membrane and battens?

Are sloping roofs with tiles ever built with more 'stuff' ie ply boarding over the trusses either on the outside or inside?

You're correct. You can get boards in between which is known as sarking and used in Scotland quite a lot, but it's not really done down here. The previous roof was just batten and tiles, no felt at all, and that did not leak.

its only now that i am beginning to understand why even a broken tile may cause a leak!
my current house had broken and missing tiles until a couple of days ago and i always wondered why it would lead to water ingress.... im pretty sure that i wont have any of the sarking stuff hence why plaster internally got damp even after light drizzle...

It depends how they overlap, I have a few broken ones but the overlap is always 3 tiles deep spo I think at least two would need to be broken in the same place to cause a problem.

quite, conversely, i couldn't understand why we had no water leaks with 10% missing or cracked, 800 tiles! not one leak & the reason being that on removal they were x 4 thick in all but an inch. tiny roof 13m x 6.5m but 8 ton of hand made 1 " thick tiles.

They must of loved you walking through the door ! Hunter Ogee and pipe for that entire house is £500 tops. Or have you got Aluminium? Would recommend felt support tray around eaves as well.

Cast iron effect plastic, deep flow stuff and one section of 160mm to take all the water from the valley. I couldn't find any cast iron effect deep flow stuff cheaper anywhere.

There is eaves felt on there smile

If you think it can be had for less than this, let me know!
