Just had a tree surgeon around and it looks like we have the dreaded knotweed frown

Wasn't picked up by the homebuyer survey and this thing has grown in a little under fortnight...

WTF do we do now. I'm having a building survey next week for possible extension, but as this will bridge over the weed, I'm not sure this is viable anymore... frown

Just get it injection treated, we do knotweed eradication in the north west and its fairly easy to get rid of. Just phone one of your local companies that do invasive weed eradication.

You can get rid of it with a suitable chemical.

If that's the only patch you have then chop it down and 'paint' the re-growth with neat Roundup. Persevere and it will go.

More than likely missed on survey because was not showing at time, it grows at a tremendous rate, so I would not bash the surveyor . If this is all you have, no need to worry as another poster said inject with Roundup ( Glyphosate) . As you now have a leaf area also spray the leaf with a fine spray (resist spray of ) just wet the leaf. Keep on top of it, it will not prevent a building extension, if the builder digs out burn on site.

Start spraying now before any digging out leaves any trace of root .

Glyphosate will deal with it.

Any garden centre or B & Q Wilkinsons etc there are different brand names but the active ingredient is always on the label , roundup is the brand leader. Look for high active ingredient you don't want a bottle of water biggrin

Glyphosate (an active ingredient) - available everywhere. Didn't know you could inject it though - it's normally absorbed via the leaves.

I would advise against chopping it down - the stuff will re-grow from the smallest bit of stem/leaf. Treat it as other people have said and wait until it's well and truly dead before getting rid of it. Also check around for other areas of growth as new shoots can grow up to 7 metres away from the main plant.

Hmmm,

The plant is right next to the house. 7 metres would place it somewhere under the dining room....

A work colleague suggested a lethal mix of diesel, roundup pro and copper salts.

It will grow through walls, through concrete etc. It might be worth getting in touch with the local council and getting a survey done. In any case I wouldn't leave it much longer before you do something about it as we're into the start of the growing season now.

You can buy the concentrated stuff on ebay and it sin't that expensive. I'd get a few packs, use it undiluted and systematically keep applying it over a few months.

Do not be overly concerned, OP.

You can deal with this yourself, without specialist companies.

Don't chop it and leave any green material about (it only needs 0.75 of a gram to propagate). You can, instead, chop, bag it (black bin bag will do) and then pour the glyphospate down the hollow stems. It may require more than one application, but this method will kill it.

Let the knotweed in the bag die off fully (leave it in there for a few weeks) then chuck it out with the rubbish. Either that, or burn it.

Cheers,

C.

I'm sure you can deal with yours quite simply though as others have directed above.

As others have said, DO NOT CHOP IT DOWN.
It is a controlled weed
The tiniest piece caught in the tread of a boot, tyre whatever will be transported and will grow somewhere else
It is IIRC illegal to transport it even unknowingly
Get rid of it in situ
Burn, poison.

paperbag I know, no help, but I have always wanted to use that. hehe

B&Q etc do stock stuff that specifically states on the packet that it will kill knotweed by the way. We thought we may have it but we didn't (thankfully!)

Good luck with it.

Where about's in the country are you?
I have a friend that's licensed to use the serious chemicals that kill off knotweed, he deals with it all the time.
