I thought you were supposed to run it occasionally during the summer to keep the inhibitor moving around (or stop the sludge settling too much).

Yep,been on timer for the last 3 weeks.
As already mentioned above it's on thermostat and thermo rad valves.
If they need to come on they will do.
Costs about £9-15 pw atm with it left on timer.

I usually shut the pilot light off and close the gas supply down in the summer. Then when my wife starts to feel cold fire it up again, this was about a week ago this year although the gas fire went on once or twice before that.
This house was built in the 60s and despite adding to the insulation it doesnt compare with more modern ones. At least we dont live in a grade 1 listed building where turning the heating on just results in higher fuel bills without really feeling any more comfortable smile

Just getting round to turning off the air-con, and using fans. Still hot here. I hate it weather wise.

So tell us, how much do you pay in cooling costs for a year?
Because its probanly easier to keep warm than keep cool!
More clothes keep door shut etc. There is only so much clothes you can take off !

Hopefully the heating season is over until until next March (antipodes)

As for the cost of air conditioning.......it can be cheaper than equivalent heating, it depends on the price of electricity.

An air conditioner pushes out say 3kW of cooling in a 40sqm room using only 1kW. Expensive if left on all the time but so essential.

Mine's been on for the past couple of weeks. It's timed to come on for half an hour in the morning then I just switch it on in the evening if I need to. I don't have it on the thermostat as I work away from home quite often and I don't like heating the place if no-one's in.

Because say you have that set to 18 degrees. And the house falls to 17 degrees. You can't tell the difference and wouldn't turn the heating on. But the thermostat will. By the time it kicks in, and has heated the water enough to nudge the air up to 18 degrees, and shut off the boiler, the heat left in the rads will probably push you up to 19 or so. Which is nice but, you'd have been happy at 17, and not spent the cash.
Who not turn the thermostat down to 17?

Actually, I agree. For the whole summer the thermostat in my house has been set to 10c. It only got cranked up to 18 last week when my wife felt cold and she didn't take up my offer to do 20 star jumps.
