I need to treat my new shed and a couple of fences, and thinking I might move away from browns and greens to something a bit more interesting but I don't want it to look naff.

The shed was new in April, it was pre-treated but I was told I should treat it again after a few months of being weathered, one of the fences is also new and the back fence has been there a while and needs some treatment. Picture of it currently below. I will be putting in some narrow raised beds along each fence line and want a colour that will look good behind some lush green plants. Decking will remain a natural colour using clear decking oil, and thinking about either keeping the shed fence a clear oil based treatment, or going for a slate blue/black colour like these:-

as it currently looks:-

Any opinions welcome, and also feel free to post pictures of your garden fence/shed if you're happy with the look, it might change my mind!

Stick with the slatey blue. Blues 'recede' to the eye and allow the green of your plants to take prominence.

I have used cuprinol autumn gold on my 80m of fencing. It is a lovely colour, looks classy and is different!

Just paint flowers on the back of the fence then you wont even have to bother planting it all up. like this

Thanks, those plants should be low maintenance too!

No advice on colour but if the slats are overlapped upwards on your side (i.e. the slot between them goes down to your neighbour's side) then be careful of painting as it seems to be quite easy to get lots of dribbles of paint running down the other side of the fence. Ask my neighbour for details of how to do this badly.

Thanks, hadn't thought of that!

I love the Cuprinol 'Garden Shades' range. Ive painted my shed & fence using their 'Old English Green'. Its a more natural looking green than the usual colour you see...

Another of their colours Ive used is 'Willow', which Ive used on some planters & obelix that I made, as well as some trellis...

Thanks, yes been looking at the the garden shades, and Urban Slate is winning at the moment. I do like that green, but might not be enough of a contrast against the plants for what I want.

Do you have any pictures? I see they do that in Ducksback which would be good for the fence, would be interested to see what it looks like.

I used Cuprinol Willow on my garden shed and bike storage shed - and like the end result.

Tried many times as I have, yet am still unable to post pics on this damn site. Too much faff, life is too short. Why can't it be more like Facebook, snap, post, on.

I moved into a house which has a couple of sheds. Both were dark brown but obviously hadn't been painted in years. Gave them a coat of Cuprinol. Think official colour is cedar red.certainly brightened them up, and looks a bit different from the usual browns and greens.

Sadolin superdec is great stuff, try brewers and the like, mixed to colour. Try wild grape with cream trim? Very 'new England'

I've just got a new shed and I've treated it with Cuprinol 'Seagrass' which is a pastel blue/green shade that looks a bit 'New England' smile. I'm putting it up tomorrow (hopefully) so will try to remember to post a picture. It makes a change from the bright orange/cedar colour that my neighbours have painted their side of the fence...

I've now painted the shed, in Cuprinol Shades Urban Slate. Easy to apply and love the colour. Still unsure of the fence colour, but might go for the Silver Copse ducksback which is slightly lighter.

My Decking is urban slate, the fence is silver copse, which is more grey in tone. The urban slate has more of a blue hue to it, very subtle difference though.

Bump. I really like this colour - what is it?

Any updated pics OP?

Also needing inspiration - we do have quite a lot of fence length and a quite 'open' large-ish garden bordering fields. I want to do something special rather than just stick with the faded orange-y gold that is on part of our fence now.

I've just planted some acers against what was a blank fence space (to the right of the slide) and the fence seems to be swallowing them up - I want them to stand out. Ideas?

Our fence...
