I currently have an old up and over garage door which is on its last legs, quite dented and recently two of the four springs have broken, definitely time to look at replacing.

I like the idea of an electric roller door but would like to know if there is anything to be aware of with these or any other better options?

Are they typically quite secure, are there any manufacturers recommended or to be avoided?

Also what should I be expecting to pay for a fitted door?

Hormann are excellent. I've dealt with GarageDoorsOnline who were great.

Garador are also good (same company as Hormann). Up & over will be the cheapest option. Sectional doors are nice, Roller doors need enough headroom to work properly.

Pic of my install for interest. This was to enclose my carport into a garage so a non standard width (I think its 16ft or so), a huge list of colours (so opted for grey), two fobs, alarm (not sure about opening from outside as I have a door to the rear). The actual electrics are made by Somfy. I am very happy with it.

We had a Cardale door fitted 6 months ago, and very happy with it. Around £1900 all in, including 4 remote and manual over ride. Fully insulated Aluminium - 40mm thick?. 10 year warranty on Motor, couple of years on everything else.

Very happy with it 6 months on!

That looks good Charlie, very tidy indeed!

I'm looking at an anthracite grey one, two remotes enclosed internal box, manual internal as I have a door from the rear, have been quoted £1400 fitted by these guys, http://www.rollerdor.net/roller-garage-doors which didn't seem bad at all! Its a bit wider than a standard double. They seem to get some good reviews.

I ordered mine via e bay Countrywide Garage Doors last month The Builders fitted it however easier to get them to arrange fitting came out at £950 plus fitting varies on coast depending on the work required you do need 12 inches of head room for insulated and 10 inches I think for non insulated

We've got a Seceuroglide Excel, which seems pretty decent. Certainly no problems with it so far.

I actually got it from a company run by a PHer. I don't think he works that far north, but he might be worth a PM for information. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?h=0...

Second quote was £1800 FWIW.

BUT.

I feel they were quoting for standard double door rather than exact fit which is c.150mm wider.
He said they would box in the edges with UPVC.... it was then alarm bells rang.
Did not put a tape measure anywhere near it.

Where are you located red?

Mine is wider than standard and the quote I got was for an exact fit.

Call Paul at alliance security in Middleton, nice guy and good price. I had a Seceuroglide Excel installed at a very good price (cheaper than online quotes for the same door which didn't include fitting). http://www.alliancegaragedoors.co.uk/

Regarding security - how do people feel they fare ?

I don't think I could break into my old up and over GRP garage door which had 3 point locking, without using tools and considerable force.

My securoglide feels flimsy - I'm sure I could force it up enough to gain entry if I was willing to risk breaking it and if a decent size bloke went for a sliding tackle, I'm unsure it wouldn't buckle inwards.
