Robot mowers

Afternoon

I'm thinking about upgrading my Cobra Mowbot... it was a cheap entry into the world of robotic mowers, but I think the time has come for something better.

What should I be looking at for 1000m2?

I'm guessing I can't use the existing guidewire with a new "garage" for whatever I end up buying?

The Cobra lets itself down by leaving a track round the outside of the lawn (always goes round perimeter to charge) and the working time setting keeps crashing now.

My neighbour's just bought a ride-on mower.

Now, everyone I know who has one, enjoys it. They're fun to drive and it's nice to enjoy a nice bit of time to stick on a podcast or whatever, and not be bothered for a chunk of time every couple of weeks. I get all that.

But it really does seem ridiculous to have such a complicated, heavy machine made up of god knows how many moving parts, throwing out a load of noise and burning fuel, while Rolly pootles along next door doing the exact same job in total silence.

It does seem like progress to me.

The cable laying machine and previous experience is one reason why I was fancying leaving it to the Stihl dealer.

Joey the mower a husqvarna 405 was installed on Monday. The cable was buried by machine and the “cut” lines have all ready disappeared. IFTTT set up with weatherundergrou d to send joey home if rain starts. So far so good.

It’s silent unless you are up close to it and headlights are fun. Also googly eye have been stuck on

Surely it's just a wire right? I'd give it a go with the new base and see if it works before pressing on with replacing the wire.

A robot mower would fall in the stream at ours, so we’ve got a ride on and a push along to do the risky bits.

You can now get electric ride on mowers too

Not sure I’m keen on how close the satellite is to your house by the looks of the video.

The husqvarna mowers are also sold as flymo for a lot less expense. Identical bar different coloured plastic.

Mine kept pulling the guide wire up and chopping it wherever the ground was a bit uneven so I went round and buried it. Didn't take long - just used a spade to make a slot and pushed it in.

Not if you install the guide wire properly.

I've installed one next to a stream with no issues.

My flymo 1200 seems to have developed a strange grinding noise when the plate starts spinning up. Can't see anything obvious caught in it, any other quick fixes I can attempt? Can the disc become imbalanced?

My 1200R started making terrible noises - turned out a length of bramble had become well and truly wound around the spindle above the blade plate. Was difficult to see and I could only retrieve it by stabbing at it with a screwdriver.

If I set mine to the max height, it does this. I have to knock it back just a touch.

Just to update. It was missing a blade, must have been slightly off balance

So I've put my Worx WR105si back into action after a year off as I had to re-lay the boundary wire.
Worked great for a week then had an issue with base station not working.
Contacted Worx support directly and even though it was a few months out of warranty they honoured it and sent through a new power supply which solved the issue.

I've now got an issue with the top buttons not working so when blade is blocked or mower lifted I have to take the mower back to the base station.

Contacted Worx again today to get some ideas on how to fix it and they've offered to pick it up and fix it again out of warranty.

So impressed with this level of customer support.

This looks pretty awesome, but at the same time I'm not sure how confident I'd be at dropping $1300 on a random Kickstarter company's first attempt at a robo mower.

It could be amazing, it could develop faults that need esoteric and limited availability parts to fix, and you wouldn't really know how good the support would be, or how long it would be around for, until after the fact.

At least with the likes of Worx, Flymo, etc you know they're still going to be around in 5 years time.
