After 17 years our trusty Bosch Maxx washing machine appears to have gone terminal. We bought it from John Lewis in October 1999 for the princely sum of £459.

It has served us well dealing with 3 children who are now all grown up and potentially leaving home.

What do I replace it with? Looking at Bosch prices it appears that I can get something at a similar price but that takes no account of inflation since 1999.

We don't need to go overboard as the usage has definitely dropped off over the past couple of years (twice a week as opposed to daily!). Any recommendations?

Our 9 year old John Lewis washing machine went bang this weekend as well (drum bearing went and I can't be arsed to change it) . Have ordered a cheapish Zanussi something or other that does a 10Kg load.

Some will advise you to spend many hundreds on a Miele and others will say buy something cheap that you like - I'm in the latter camp

I have a Samsung EcoBubble thing. It cost £1200 and is a complete piece of crap. Broken down twice in a year. Spent £26 today at a launderette. We bought it because I like tech (blue LED!!!) and also a big drum 12KG as we seem to have more washing than a hotel.

Our last washing machine (washer dryer) was a Zanussi and lasted well.

Would buy a Miele but the drums are only 8KG but may suit you fine

My next door neighbour has a chain of domestic appliance stores and he recommended LG. We got it and it's been great so far. Still a long way to go to reach the age of the old bosch one though.

That's my dilemma. If I could get another one of the same quality then it might last such that I couldn't give a damn wink. Anyway I'm just trying to short-cut the search process so I appreciate any current recommendations.

You basically answered your own question, previous Bosch lasts 16 years...therefore a new Bosch would be the best choice! biggrin

We've had several through the years (left behind in moves) and never had one break.

With the machines costing hundreds of pounds and zillions of programmes, I have to wonder how we survived with a Hoover Twin Tub all those years ago.

We bought a Bosch 4 years ago to replace a 10 year old Bosch and so far it's been (touching every bit of wood I can see) brilliant. Apart from the beeping when it finishes its cycle. That drives me insane and I can't get it to shut up. We've got an 8 year old who seems to have an allergy to keeping clean, a cocker spaniel who seems to have the same allergy and I quite like getting mucky so it gets used a lot.

Can't remember exactly what we paid, but it was under £500 & we got it from Currys as they could deliver and install the same day (last one blew up with an expensive sounding bang).

I wonder about the reliability of the new Bosch machines, my daughter has one and the main bearings failed after 1 year 11 months of a 2 year warranty, luckily the engineer came out said it was uneconomical to repair and she received a new machine.

Miele - superb machines and rock solid. Ours was about £900 from John Lewis with a 10 year guarantee. Used seven times a week and faultless.

Thanks or all the suggestions. Looked at the LG's, Samsung and Miele. Decided that the Miele would have to outlive me to make it viable eek

So after doing all the comparisons ended up going for another Bosch....Bigger and faster than the one it's replacing but costs less. Fingers crossed it lasts the same time!

Looking for one, and realising this is much less fun than TV shopping...

Aside from the unhappy Samsung owner above, does anyone else have one?

This one seems a decent price at £379, 5 year warranty and its a Which? best buy. Failing to see any reason not to go for it other than it's not the default Bosch!

We've had our Samsung for a couple of years now (replaced a Bosch, but I've lost confidence in Bosch because of problems with a recent replacement dishwasher).

Aside from a badly fitted seal when it left the factory (fixed in about 10 minutes the next day thanks to AO's customer service) we've had no problems with it. The "Daily Wash" cycle is the one used most often and it does a full load in just over an hour.

Siemens for me, but my moms Miele is great too. Both whisper quiet, reliable as hell. Mine is 10-12 years old, my moms about 15-17 years and neither had reason to call out an engineer.
If one broke down tomorrow I would have no qualms about getting another. Pricey but another couple of hundred gets you reliablity and low noise.

Bosch for us as well. Had Indesit and Zanussi, both lasted a handful of years. The Bosch is c. 7 years old and well used. Previous was a Bosch also, that died when the rubber door seal got damaged and leaked onto electrics (not a manufacturing issue, it had been fine for years). Washing machines aren't meant to catch fire, we found out...

We're lucky to have an old style washing machine engineer near us. When the motor wore out (on the previous and current one) he rewound the motor for less than 100 notes. Done in less than an hour in his van so the machine was out of action for only a day. He tells us Bosch are among the simplest to work on, and the internals between cheap and expensive models are virtually the same.

Miele Classic , the ones with 10 year parts and labour warranty no other make comes close to this , read the small print , spare part not avail be up to 25 years and they supply a new machine FOC , it just feels like a quality product and is heavy enough to require 2 delivery guys and not the normal one apparently according to the place we got it from .which I can't remember who it was .

Our is quiet , efficient and so I am told by one who knows the best wash ever !,,,

Lamona like our old CDM fitted by house builder are cheapo versions of Beko , can they be cheaper , the one that came with the house lasted 6 months and flew to bits on spin literally 2 nd lasted 6 years but only 2 of us and light use
