Hi all

I would be interested in some ideas for a low cost business to setup in a largely student populated city.

I live in a small/medium sized city with approx 60,000 students spread over 4 various sizes unis and colleges.

I have a city centre based small unit on an industrial estate plus a medium sized van.

What ideas, even wacky ones, do people have.

Sell something out the van on student nights and near the SU at the weekend?

Probably not big enough site for summer storage for the students?

More ideas, shop selling new era style hats?

Slightly illegal but a booze take away service?

Burrito's are always a winner for city centres

Not a year round option but..

Mobile fancy dress sales.

Queues the length of the street of students for nights such as Halloween. They had to put a bouncer on the door of the fancy dress shop downstairs from our office last year. Bonkers.

Storage boxes, drop off, collect, store for £5 a month or whatever - Students never have enough room.

Mobile shop - one of those Aladdin's Cave type that sells a little bit of everything - stationary, snacks, confectionery, cleaning products, batteries, phone chargers, cheapo tools etc

Mobile bar/off licence.

Laundry collect/delivery

I've been thinking about that storage box idea, I think it'd work in Liverpool. Just working out how to run a drug dog over each box ;-)

Surely students store stuff at home? Why would they cart all their stuff from home off to uni and then pay to put it in storage when they can leave it with mum and dad for free?

I know someone who did very well from this in the states. Charge per bag with free collection and delivery. He set the thing up and then paid other students to do the work.

Illegal rave venue?

The problem with students is they have no money.

Booze is likely to be a 2 litre bottle of Coop branded cider so not much margin in it.

Cheap furniture rentals-beds, desks, chairs, chest of drawers?

Handyman service for student accommodation landlords?

Maybe a business where you can use the students as cheap labour to make/package something to sell to people with money?

Really? When I was a student, 30 years ago, we walked everywhere. In my nearest city, they've had to build several multi-storey car parks to accommodate students' cars!

I stand corrected.

No wonder my son whinged at me when I said I wouldn't buy him a car. All his friends must have one.

Why are they voting Labour and not Conservative then? They still have a bit to learn.

The storage box idea is good. Anything that aids a lazy lifestyle. Ironing service? Washing up service, put crocks in big plastic bucket you collect and drop off?

What about a Yoga/Pilates studio, ask the uni if there are any students who want to be instructors and you may get an instructor willing to work for free/experience?
