So... Although I've not checked myself I've read the following ...

1) 32Bit apps are no longer available on the Store

2) Purchased 32bit apps are no longer available to download in the purchase tab

If these 'facts' are correct then I'll not be upgrading to 11 anytime in the near future as some of my favourite games are 32 bit and will probably never be upgraded.... I don't think I could live without Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies plus I have a number of war games that have probably cost £150 that will not be updated.

So I have a few questions....

1) What happens if I have to reset my ipad ? It sounds like these legacy apps will no longer be available in the cloud.
2) My Daughter has a 5th generation iPod Touch that she uses daily. Will the store basically stop working for her ?

Sounds a bit crazy to me to kill off 32 bit apps like this.... If it's as draconian as it sounds then that will be me opting out of the Apple....

Is your current computer running Windows 3.1?

It’s not crazy killing off 32bit apps, the only reason windows still supports 32bit is that a lot of businesses still use old IT. I believe most processors for PC’s have been 64bit for the last 10years so actually phones are behind the curve.

Developers have had 4 years to upgrade apps, so it shouldn’t be coming as a surprise, however as you state some developers went bust/stopped updating the apps.

In answer to your question though it’s a bit vague at the moment but from cult of Mac they have this:

“When the transition to 64-bit is complete, older iOS devices — including the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, and the fourth-generation iPad — will no longer get app updates, and won’t be compatible with the newest iOS releases.

Apple hasn’t confirmed when it will drop support for 32-bit apps, but it’s likely to happen with its iOS 11 upgrade this fall.”

Also the 5th gen iPod touch is now 5 years old which is ancient in IT terms, maybe a birthday/Christmas present is in order.

Yes I know where you are coming from.... 5 Years is a long time in the world of IT... Or it used to be... BUT Her iPod 5 still runs all her apps and 98% of new apps fine thank you very much as does my iPad 2 ( creaking a bit now ) , 3, and 4

As does the 2500k cpu in my PC which is coming up on 7 years old.... Gone are the days of having to upgrade every 6 months to eek out the last drop of performance.

The problem here is that developers write to the lowest common denominator and with the power of these devices the only way for Apple to get people to buy new kit is to make sure that the older kit stops working.....

I put iOS 11 beta on my phone, not realising 32 bit support had gone. I have an app that I frequently use but no longer in the App Store. It got deleted on install and I didn't back up before (my fault!) so although I have gone back to 10.3.3 I can't get the app back!
iOS 11 was so buggy it was unusable but I won't be updating to the final version - if I can locate the app on an old backup somewhere!

You can’t blame Apple. Android have also gone 62bit, as have most/if not all pc developers.

My dad has an iPad 2, put that next to my air2 and the speed difference is incredible.

Beta2 has been a big improvement. Beta software is always buggy that’s the whole purpose of it to iron out problems.

I get that but how do you go backwards? It took about 20 seconds to open an app - anyway I need the 32 bit app so even if they make ios11 great it won't be for me. It's a niche app and no longer developed so no chance of a 64 bit update.

Of course I can blame Apple ! I am currently using many apps on my Air 2 that I will lose and that I have invested a fair bit of money in. It is within their power to allow these apps to still function in ios11.

It appears that they have chosen not to. If this is the case then I suspect that I am not the only loyal customer of many years they will lose ....

They have not chosen to do that so the software can be made more streamlined, less buggy, smaller file sizes and so on.

The fact that some of your devices you’ve listed won’t even accept IOS11 means it’s not that big of a deal.

Unless they make these old apps permanently unavailable. Yes if they remain in the store for the older devices that's ok ....

On your iPhone if you go into Settings > General > About > Apps you will get a list of the 32 bit apps which you will lose when you upgrade to iOS 11.

Developers fault I would have thought? Apple seems to have always dropped old tech where Windows always seems to try to keep running on old kit (The impression I get anyway from work PC)

Been through Mac OS 8 till today. Can fire up an old G4 but that ran out on 9 I think, possibly the first version of 10 but all software. It will not run modern Safari.
