As long as you buy a barrel of liquid chlorine you are good to go, try to evenly distribute it but if not just pour it in and stir it with something, you will need a leaf net so why not buy one and use that to stir it in. Chlorine is stronger in higher ph water, rain water lowers the ph so worth adding a solution of "ph up", I wouldn't get too into test kits and the like as the dip strips go off quickly and you soon get a feel for what keeps it clear.

Never mix 2 different chemicals at the same time so I would do ph up, wait an hour and then add the chlorine but the chlorine will work without it.

I can't believe you haven't at least bought a lilo and had a little float around.

Cheers, I'll get both tomorrow and do as you say. I really have to turn the swamp into clear water and don't want to strain out the filtration system on day one!

Thanks

Don't even get me started, my wife already has a pink flamingo one ready to go!

You can buy a floculant which attracts all of the particles together but you need a good Hoover or pump to waste for that, I expect the chlorine will kill the green dead in a day or so, just try to leave it to die and drop to the bottom.

Brilliant. I preferred the Swan one hehe - graceful, elegant birds, vicious when attacked.

So, PH Up, an hour or so later some chlorine. Scoop the leaves out (obviously!). How much of each? The pool is 11m x 4m x 1.4m. c. 60k litres (after steps, cover cave and wall angle).

I really appreciate your help here.

Don't get taken in by pH up - just use sodium bicarbonate, it also acts as a pH buffer

For testing get a liquid kit (e.g. 5 drops in 5 ml of water) and DPD for Chlorine

Could you experienced PH'ers please explain in a simple and plane language. Obviously I am a novice here, so all help is very welcome!

PS The pool company will do so, but I trust the collective PH wisdom far more!

The ph up will give a dosage on the side but a bucket of warm water with probably a pint glass full of the chemical is normal, but just stick to the weight per litre.

I think you will prob use 1 X 5 gallon barrel of chlorine but it will have a suggested dosage for maintenance or shock and you want shock....I have similar ish size and just pour the whole barrel in.

Oddly enough, we both are in financial services, both have a Rangie (saw one in the pics) and both have a pool and a daughter we would do anything for.

I personally would take advice from the pool company. You'll need to decide what system you are going to use and this may impact on the initial treatment.

Plus the actual amount will vary on the size of the pool.

The initial treatment will have no effect on the system you run, I am pretty sure of that unless you are going saltwater etc., the chlorine will gas off quite quickly, especially with no cover on it.

Some treatments are to be avoided when you run UV but it will be a while before that is running, chlorine will not affect the UV.

Is a salt water setup not an option. Seems to be popular out here.

I have a salt system - the water doesn't taste of salt (of course), but the chlorine is produced by passing salt water over an electrolyte. Fantastic system and largely maintenance free - I never need to check levels, it does it all automatically.

Nice and not stupidly expensive, any disadvantages? (apart from pouring a load of salt in at the start!)
