I foresee a 'Show us your screwdrivers' thread in the near future; obviously it will polarize into slotted vs crosshead camps, then some one will post a picture of a hammer and nails and all hell will break loose.

if you're doing a kitchen, then get a lightweight drill/driver with torque limiting.
then buy a box of bits with multiple pz2s

Oh and the Bahco manual stuff is good.

They "fit" insofar as you may be able to undo a fastener that isn't very tight with minimal damage, but they are different standards.

Whoever invented slotted should be shot! Hateful things

I've got loads of Weras, but these are still my favourites:

I'm not sure who makes them for Halfords (they're made in Germany) but mine are 7 or 8 years old and still great. I find the handles much better than the Weras.
Another vote for the Halfords Advanced set. I've had mine for a similar amount of time as Accelebrate, and they've been absolutely faultless.

The soft-grip handles are still in good condition, the tips are still sharply defined, and the shafts aren't bent. I'm quite heavy on tools, so when I got these (impulse purchase - they were half price when bought with 5 litres of oil), my expectations of longevity were limited.

Best part of ten years on, and they are still the best screwdrivers I've ever owned.

These look a good deal. Might have to even though I really don't need them. :-)

I bought the 900 set for a few more quid.

Did they come with the wall mounts as shown here? If you go on the wera website the 300 range seems to have more "features" than the 900. odd

They have been dead for quite some time and probably before guns existed.

Hand cutting a posidrive head and driver may also have been a little bit tricky at the time.

Unless you're a sparky, how often does anyone use a manual screwdriver, especially a slotted? A PZ2 lives in the combi and that's just about all I use.Last few times I've had to use a slotted were for opening tins of paint, a quarter turn of a screw on a table saw fence and to remove some old door hinges that were painted over so had to find an old screwdriver to hammer in and remove the paint.
Did recently buy a Halfords set, but have only used the pozi out of that set as well. smile

Crossheads* aren't much better. Trying to match up a crosshead screwdriver with a crosshead screw head drives me to incoherent fury.

Bring on the Torx!

* yes I know there's a subtle difference between Philips, Pozidrive and JIS and all the rest of the fking mutant family of bd crosshead standards

Surely there's a place in the world for a nice brass hinge with matching slotted screws, heads all neatly aligned?

I work for a Japanese company and didn't know about JIS screwdrivers, but at least I understand the hassle we have had stripping down parts. I'll be getting a set for the workshop and another for working on my MR2 at home.

I have to say I'd never heard of it either. I remember being very surprised when I snapped a Phillips bit trying to undo a screw on a Honda Jazz, so perhaps that was JIS.

Seems sometimes JIS has a dimple in the top but it isn't always there.

It's a well kept secret. smile

I've been having problems with the "Phillips" screws on Japanese bikes since about 1973, but it's only recently that I found out about the JIS format.

Yes, that's the set, I won't use the holders though as I have a cabinet to put them in. I doubt I'll use them for chiselling too much, however the hex bolster will be handy to get some extra torque and means the handles will not get chewed up by clamping mole grips on to them.

Jap cross heads is news to me too, but does explain why I've been quietly hankering for new screwdrivers since I got a Subaru, I've been assuming all my crossheads are worn out! Off to amazon with the wallet then...
