I thought I would get in early with a 2018 lawn thread to follow on from 2017.

I scarified in September, top dressed and re-seaded but by the end of the growing season it hadn't quite come back to life so I have high hopes for next year. I need to reshape/reduce the size of the lawn by about 25% to accommodate larger borders (and replant the garden) when the weather is a bit better so quite a bit ahead in 2018....

Lawns not bad but only small. Problems with brown spots (dog peeing) and moss

Recommendations will be gratefully received.

Not sure I will be able to, after my mower gave two solid black puffs of smoke before expiring after doing my final cut of the season!
If only I was handy enough to strip the engine!
At least the lawn is looking good right now.....

What engine is it? I enjoyed taking my Briggs to bits twice ! Not hard either and loads of YouTube vids for it.

Lawn was a bit wet but 13 degrees can’t argue with an end of year tidy up, did the same last year.

I'll join in early.

My first house with a small garden is ready in April.

It comes without turf so will be asking some junior questions if you don't mind.

Big year for me and my lawn 2018!

We moved into our house a couple of years ago and the grass was about 4 ft high, uneven and full of moss and weeds. In reality it needed re turfing but the money had to be spent elsewhere. I have been trying to tame it for 2 summers but feel I have a chance of obtaining a decent lawn this year.

I'm hoping to overseed the dry (shade affected) areas of the lawn in the Spring. Tried it back in Sept, but tbh the seed didn't take (probably my fault for not watering enough). The other, probably more major issue is the masses of moss. It'll be hard work to sort.

Trying to buy this a at the moment. Like the rest of the house the garden has been neglected but its a decent size especially once a chainsaw has done the dirty.

It has this huge clover type in the lawn though, any ideas.

I relaid my lawn in 2016, a good plop of soil then turf. Looked the business and took well.

Fast forward to last year and now seeing the grass thinning somewhat, badly near the fence. It gets sunligt for most of the day too. No weeds or moss though which is good

FIL recommended spiking? the lot to get more air into the soil then seeding the affected areas. Now he talks a lot of nonsense but just checking that it's the right call or even worth a shot before I do it.

Cheers guys.

I was thinking about overseeding with a fine grass seed in spring due to much damage from a local badger population last year. The tougher stuff survived well and has taken over most of the lawn. Any suggestions on what to get?

As my lawn is in shade and on clay, i’ve over-seeded for number of years with expensive shade tolerant seed in the spring, along with all the other preparations, and every winter it still looked a mess. Last July of all months, I threw down a box of B&Q cheap shady seed and though looks a little worse for wear this time of year due to having a two year old running over the worm casts, overall it looks the best i’ve ever seen it. This year will purchase of a large bag of seed from B&Q and overseed in April, then a very light dust of seed every two or three weeks until late September, as I’ve spent too much time and money in the past, I’m going on the cheap and spending an hour a week on it this year to see what I end up with.

That’s what I’ve told the wife anyway........::

Glad it's not just me then! Getting the mower out & mowing recently, I was worried that I looked like 'that' neighbour (the neighbourhood weirdo!). If it grows, it must be cut.

Just moved in to a new build, back garden isn't prepared at all yet.

So, what's the easiest way to remove a load of the rocks (range from 1" to ~6") before I start preparing to seed it?

Unless you both happen to be in the same neighbourhood, I'm afraid that DOES make you the neighbourhood weirdo(s)!!!

Not sure of the engine, think it is a B&S - currently floundering with man-flu, can't face the 20m outside walk to the shed (or the thought of getting dressed...)...what an unhealthy start to the year frown
Still not convinced I have the skills/time/energy for an engine rebuild...but thx for the thought!

Moved in to my house 2 years ago and we've got a patch of grass about 10ft square. They had a dog and we've got a dog now, and we noticed that there were yellow patches where she would wee. We've used the "Dog Rocks" in her water and the yellow patches have gone - more or less.

New problem is that there are dead patches and big tufts of grass growing. It's not uniform and it just doesn't look right at all. In my mind I am thinking of pulling it all up and relaying new turf on it, but I'm not sure. Has anyone else had similar issues and what have you done to resolve it?

Time to start on the lawn soon. Until early last year I used Greenthumb for about 4 years and whilst the lawn was nice and green and weed free it never really lasted.

So now I'm back to weeds and moss.

Am I right that should put this stuff down first to kill the moss and then rake it out. When's the best time to start all of this?

Once that's sorted then some of this and seed when appropriate.

All advice welcomeyes
