I gave in weeks ago. I have too much grass to use a sprinkler on so it's all brown now.

Last year through the summer I ended up spending circa £450 on water (I'm metered) using my sprinklers etc I've got 1/3 of an acre it was pain in the bum not only cost but moving sprinklers around and just wasn't worth it. This year I've done sweet FA on my lawn and so glad I did as it now it just a crunchy brown mess.

Mine went from picking up a builder's tonne bag of grass per cut to filling one mower basket in one cut a few weeks ago. And now it's mostly dead.

Hey ho, the weather's nice...

Yes, I think I'm going to give up with the lawn watering as well. Seems to be a losing battle.

That Lawn Expert book suggests that you need to water enough for it to penetrate 4 inches deep into the soil.

We went away for eight days so left a sprinkler timer in charge of the new lawn. It had gone nuts while we were away. Now taking it down a bit, slowly over a week.

I can see you have 2 sprinklers to cover that lot. Must have thrown one hell of a lot of water over it for it to be that green! hehe

Roll on hose pipe band!

Round Ashbourne the water has been off and they have been on emergency supplies of bottled water, tankers for the cattle to be able to drink, due to the surge in demand and low water pressure.

I never got around to scarifying in spring to get rid of dead moss and thatch etc so would it be a good time to do it now, given that the grass is now thin, dry and brown? I just assumed the actual process of raking would be easier as there is less grass to rake through.

First rain in Northern Ireland today after 3 weeks of 20 - 25 degree sunny days.

Hosepipe ban came in about 10 - 12 days ago; managed to water a 2 month old 45m buxus whip hedge 15 minutes before the ban started and twice thereafter with watering cans (not fun) but I'm no longer smug about my grass. It's fared better than the neighbours who all cut theirs bowling green short, but it's struggling badly now.

Hoping the rain helps!

Now would be a terrible time to scarify!

Scarifying inevitably damages the grass, and you’re relying on good growing conditions to let the grass recover from that damage. If you scarify now you’ll rip up almost all of your grass and end up with hardly anything left.

Don’t do it now. Wait until cooler, damper conditions in the autumn.

Anyone found any ghosts/bodies appearing in their lawn?

Gawthorpe hall has had the old Victorian garden come through in the heat.

I like that. Any idea how I can manufacture a similar effect and leave rude messages for future owners of my garden to discover?

Roger that. Thanks. I was hoping there would be an easier time to do it (as only have a hand rake) but there probably isn't!

That'll be the problem, should've used grass.
