After a little help. We have a pocket door to our utility room and I'm after a little device to make the door child proof so the kid's can't access the utility room.

The type of thing I have in mind is a simple round button recessed into the top of the door itself (top of the door out of the kids reach). When the button is pushed it pops out about 10mm and stops the door sliding back into the wall as the raised button gets caught on the door frame. When you want to open the door you push the button back in and it stays flush with the door allowing the door so slide back into the wall. Very similar to the way a push to open - push to close basin and bath plug work but much smaller, say 30mm diameter max.

I've found a similar method on Google (See below) that someone else has done by putting a wooden peg into a hole in the door to lock the door, remove the peg and the door can slide open.

I've come across some plastic pop out coat hooks and cupboard door latches for use in caravans but I would like something straight sided (so it doesn't dent the door frame) and made of metal so it's more robust. Does anyone know of such a device?

Thanks PositronicRay. That would work, but I'm after a simple push button so it's super easy and quick to operate and looks clean an tidy.

Sorry the solution you posted looks properly rough. If you want it to look good I would install a proper lock. Use a flush fitting handle to actuate it - a tennis/squashcourt handle would be perfect. Pair one of the aforementioned with mechanised latch and you have your locking solution

Thanks for all the replys, unfortunately none of them are quite what I'm after. Hopefully the below image will explain it a bit clearer, a nice clean button that can either be pushed in (and stays pushed in) or push again and pops out.

This type of thing (ideally made from metal for strength) is exactly what I'm after, I just can't find anyone who makes or sells them!

Not quite what you are looking for, but if you google pocket door lock there are all metal options

Cheap enough to see if you can make it work.

Or possibly look at dishwasher/cooker switches that pop out.

Thanks again everyone for your help.

Fredt, I had seen those ones and they are on my fall back list if I can't find exactly what I'm looking for, if only they had straight sides! I have stared to look at cooker switches so will see if I can find something.

It might be easier to put a hole in the door, and then mount something on the wall/architrave to go in the hole e.g. a gate/stable latch.

I'd be surprised a pop-in-pop-out mechanism could stand up to our children trying to get into a larder of biscuits and treats for very long.

The problem with those ideas is that the architrave is going to take a battering and I'm not sure they would withstand too much force themselves.

How about this, which uses a claw latch which would be much stronger and hidden?
