Buying a small shed which will be hidden from view, what is the best protection for the wood. Im after something to put on and leave, not fussed if it looks a dodgy colour. Any views on using old engine oil and diesel?

Is Accoya treated wood generally available as yet? (Patented wood treatment by Accyss Technology - will last outdoors without further treatment for up to 50 years.

Would be extremely expensive for a shed.

Could heat up some linseed oil and give it a few coats. If you want it to look nice a few coats of linseed paint would be the best bet.

Second above, boiled or raw linseed oil would work well but would need to use a thinner like turps for example to get it to soak in.Lasts well though.
It is a good anti rust coat for steel as well.

As a Pistonheader you should know the best external wood preservative and water repellent - Waxoyl diluted down 25% with white spirit and applied to the wood with a brush on a dry warm sunny day.
I have used this mix for years on sheds, fences and decking. At our last property the softwood decking was still completely as new after 20 years having been treated every 2/3 years. One of the other benefits is the treatment does not discolour the natural tint of the wood.
