Or is this the norm? Below is what i’ve Just received. It’s just for the automation of a normal wooden gate for a drive. Thoughts and opinions gratefully received and if you happen to be able to recommend another firm in the north Oxfordshire/ south Warwickshire area that would be great.

Automation of Gates

To supply and install appropriate cable to the garage area and install the automation system which can be controlled for entry/exit using the radio key fobs only.

Description of Automation

A set of closing safety beams will be located outside of the gates. These will be mounted on the gate piers and the beams will prevent the gates from closing should it detect an obstruction.
A set of closing/opening safety beams will be located inside of the gates. These will be mounted on small wooden posts and the beams will prevent the gates from closing should it detect an obstruction.
An electronic control panel will be positioned next to the gates. The control panel is the central core of the system and will be housed in a weatherproof enclosure. It will be necessary to access the control panel during service visits.
3 x radio remote key fobs will be provided allowing remote activation of the system when approaching the gates.

Underground.
The drive units for the gates will be located below ground at the hinge position. These are located in order to achieve a pleasing finish and to hide as much of the equipment as possible. It will be necessary to access the drive units during service visits. It will be possible to disengage the gate from the drive motor using a secure key operated mechanism should this be required.

£5399.00 plus VAT

An annual service every year of the automation can be quoted for if required

A quotation for connection of the automation can be quoted for next week when Neil looks at the garden lighting connections

· All PAC installations are covered by a comprehensive 12 months parts and labour warranty followed by any additional manufacturer parts warranty on all gate automation equipment, subject to terms and conditions.

Does that include the digging of the moat and supply of the drawbridge as well?

You get what you pay for with gate closers. Cheap ones will be worn out in no time if it's heavily trafficked and you need a good response if faulty. Somet8mes there is a facility to uncouple the mechanism in an emergency from inside the property. I can ask next week if you like what our contractors fit/ recommend but do your research, depending on size / quality that quote may not be too bad. Always get 3 tho.

Sounds reasonable, but not cheap. Can you give me a better location as I have a chap currently doing fencing for me. He has done electric gates for a famous celeb (I'd call her A list) but it's not my remit to give his clients details away. He has just fitted an electric (deer) fence for me including a deer grid. He priced up electric gates but it was no cheaper than the deer grid, all things considered - price similar to your quote for the grid, side fence and pedestrian gate.

He's back here tomorrow to finish off so I can give him your location and see if he is interested in quoting.

There's a chap at Stourton, near to the Cotswold Distillery who has been making metal gates for years. I'm sure he'll be able to put you on to someone, if they don't do it themselves.

I’m following this thread as my plan in next couple of months is to install a set of Malvern or Deer Park gates from CDI. I haven’t been able to establish who will install the motors or indeed what systems are available. I will be doing as much as I can myself with if necessary a ground worker whom I trust on day rate.

Sounds expensive, we charge about 3.5k for auto only but there are a lot of variables like cable runs groundwork etc. ( we would have to charge extra to come to you as we are in watford but search Linkcare on the web and they should now a good installer in your area )

Arden Gates fitted some automated gates at Cornbury Park so they definitely cover your area.

Not sure I want to speak up since 'all responses are hatefully received' but here goes. I was quoted £4k + VAT for a solid wooden gate (5m x 2.5m) with a side entrance gate, all metal framed and opening sideways, the other two quotes were in the same ball park. The company we opted for are based in Leicestershire (we're in Devon) and they do projects all over the UK, if you want their details PM me. I should add that ours is a new build so it's zero rated for VAT.

Sounds in line with quotes I've received too. So I'd say it'll be about right.

Do you have more details on the units they are using, where your supply is coming from etc etc?
If it was supply of the gate too then maybe not so bad, but for automation of an existing gate it seems high if the power source is relatively close by.
Is there a reason you want to go for the units that work near the hinge area? I can't imagine they will be able to operate in anything more than a very light breeze if they are solid wood?
