Hi

Looking for opinions on this old summerhouse. What would you do with this?

It is a large foot print for relatively small internal space, probably around 1.5x2.5m internally. It leaks and is mouldy. Currently just used for storing old junk that is no longer needed.

It also cuts off a good couple of metres of garden behind it, which also happens to be the sunniest part of the garden because my garden is north facing.

I'm thinking of pulling it down, get rid of the hedge behind it and fence all along. Perhaps some decking and a covered area for our table and chairs.

Interested in what others think.

Thanks
Mike

Suggested that to err indoors as there is nothing nearby which would be affected by the flames/carnage but was denied. Still could have fun chopping it down and letting it collapse.

It's just taking up space. Has to go right? I can't see the point in a summerhouse but wanted to check in case I'm missing something... guess not. Would gain a lot of garden back.

Once the hedge and summerhouse is gone, you'll have a better view of those houses at the back, and they of you.

How bad is it, dismantle and offer for sale/free on one of the Facebook sites. Might save you needing to take it to the dump!

As a child I'd have loved that, rotten or not. I made my own den/camp/castle out of some scraps of wood with an old gate as a floor. (slept out in it a few times during the summer)

Why not try and preserve it for the kiddies, bit of roof felt and a splash of paint, probably got a few yrs left in it.

It's not that bad on the surface but had been leaking for years as the roof has the wrong tiles for the pitch.

Good point about the privacy angle and view of the houses. I was thinking of having the hedge replaced with a featheredge fence but it probably won't give the same coverage as it'll be lower.

I've just cut the hedge back too, so it's looking a bit bare at the moment. It'll grow back in no time.

+1 on this; provided it's structurally sound then roof felt to stop the leaks and it'll dry out over the summer, and a coat of Ducksback.

Either that, or carefully take the glass out, then not-so-carefully dismantle what's left with a chainsaw and skip/burn the parts.

£20 to send her to the Bingo and then have an ‘accident’ with matches whilst she is out.

I had a rotten shed and a similar summerhouse left by the previous owners of my house. The shed was on the patio so I cut it up with a reciprocating saw and took it to the dump. The summerhouse is covering a bad bit of fencing so I stained it and while it looks better it has to go soon.

Whatever you do is only delaying the inevitable

Seriously?

You either want to keep it or you don't.

Pull it down.

To combat the poorer privacy, plant a tree in its place, ideally an eucalyptus tree right on the boundary.

Thanks. Funny enough we had a rotting shed too, complete with up and over style garage door.. that went last year.

The privacy point is a good one. The garden is already overlooked a bit. Not sure about a tree, I have a large magnolia just off frame on the left and it causes a bit of friction with the neighbours.

Shame you could have had a great thread going here. I enjoyed the last one.

Brilliant. Sadly I don't think I'd have the bottle for that. I'd be worried that the smoke would have the environment police out or something. I'm too sensible frown

I’d make sure it 3/4 on their side of the boundary just in case you decide to cut it down in 15 years or so.
