Ring WiFi Doorbell
Discussion
It's similar to the GoPro history I suspect. A company comes out with a decent and reliable product and charges a premium for it over their costs, but that tempts the Oriental people to rip the idea off, occasionally with a product that's at least as good and maybe better, but definitely MUCH cheaper. I bought a Qumox sport camera identical in appearance to a GoPro Hero 2 when the Hero was hundreds of pounds and mine was mere tens of pounds. It's so good that it's actually better than the GoPro in video performance. This is some years ago but clones are available all the time. The gamble is that for every really good clone there's dozens of rubbish ones. I got lucky and hit a good one, but others have caught a cold with cheapos. Thus it will be with these doorbells I'm sure. Ring pose as the Gold Standard and Pretenders rise and fall all around them.

I use the RING Standalone (non doorbell) and it's really good. It's in the garage , so if anyone goes inside I get an alert and can view live.
You don't have pay the subscription fee (I don't)
For me it's early warning of scum breaking in to Garage.
I can live view whenever I want though.
That being said - It's having a issue at the minute where i'm not getting the life view (motion detection still working etc)
I've just 'upgraded' my Tinternet...........probably something to do with that.
What features do I miss out on if I don't pay the subscription fee? You don't have pay the subscription fee (I don't)

Anyone using one a fair distance from their router? Ours would be about 25 ft, through one floor and cavity wall.
Mine is about the same distance, maybe 20 ft........through 1 inner wall, house outer wall, garage wall.It was working perfectly - some reason I currently have a glitch where I can't connect so i'm struggling to recommend it now........annoyingly it was so good for 6 months.
A couple of times it said my internet was slow and was struggling to connect remotely.
I upgraded to Fibre to cure the problem, re-synced the camera to the new Hub and now it won't connect at all (unless triggered by motion)

I have one that's probably 30m from the house (on a gate post, lower down than the house with metal railings between). It's right on the margins of what's usable (and I have decent wifi APs). To make it fully robust I'm considering an outdoor AP.
For 25ft and in most circumstances, depending on your wifi kit, they should be fine.
(I'm another that doesn't bother with the subscription service. I suspect at some point they'll start charging just to use it real time, at which point I'll probably bin them I do wish all of these vendors would give the option for the tech minded to use their own infrastructure...but then there'd be no forever payments I guess).
I found a Ring 1 at Argos for £89, so not too much more than the Chinese knock offs. I also bought a TP link range extender to ensure a good signal at the front door. I'll be fitting it tomorrow so fingers crossed.
Ref the comment on wiring to the existing bell if you have an analogue bell, no diode, if it's a digital bell, use diode. Ring have some excellent videos on their website to help in set up.

Anyone experiencing very poor audio quantity from the Ring Chime?
I sent the first one back, assuming it was faulty. The replacement sounds just as bad. It has a hissing sibilance and vibration thats quite unpleasant. Doesn't seem to matter what volume is set or what tone is selected. It's like the sounds are sampled at a very low rate and recorded too high so are distorting.
Anyone get the same on theirs?
