I'm a complete amateur at anything DIY but have started to discover that the right tools can make most jobs easier, and a multitool seems like one of those things that I could end up using quite a bit in the near future cutting out boxes in plasterboard, trimming down fitted wardrobes and for a long line of other odd jobs around the house I've got lined up.

I could be wrong but having read through some reviews and a fairly lengthy thread on here it seems that the higher end ones just add either cordless features or less vibration for a bit more comfort over prolonged use. If that's fair then I don't want to stretch my budget too far - I'm looking £30-60 range at the moment. I'm okay with corded but if there's a good cordless one in budget there is definitely some convenience there.

I've heard the Aldi one mentioned, and I've seen that Screwfix do the Titan one for £50 (given how a few people raved about their Titan SDS I thought that'd be worth a look.) But I've seen stuff like the Bosch PMF220CE in B&Q/Amazon etc for £60 too - it seems there are plenty of options.
Does anyone have any recommendations for anything specific?

And bonus points for any recommended blades to go with so I'll have the right ones when I need it - I've seen Saxton well recommended as a supplier but don't know one blade from another.

I've got a Saxton one & it works very well. Only issue I've had with it is the on/off switch doesn't function but as it's stuck in the "on" position I've not bothered fixing itlaugh

Used it for allsorts - trimming the bottom of doors, holes in plasterboard etc.

Pretty sure I bought mine off Ebay from Saxton themselves - paid around the £30 mark and it came with a load of blades.

I bought a Bosch one about 10 years ago when the concept was quite new. It's a great 'get out of jail free' tool sometimes but does vibrate a lot.

A friend later bought a Ryobi one which is much nicer to use - less vibration, soft start and it seems quieter too.

Blades will depend on what you want to do with it. I'd choose 3 wood-cutting straight ones in different widths, a semi-circle one and the grinder has been used too. The metal-cutting blade is useless, won't even cut copper pipe.

Note that these tools are lightweight with relatively little cutting power and no use for large jobs, just the odd tight corner now and again when nothing else will do it.

Screwfix did have a mains Titan one for £30 - I don't see it on their website now (I only bought it in May!).

It's OK. Not my favourite bit of kit, but it's a good get out of jail free tool.

If I knacker this one I'll buy a Bosch or Makita I think (or maybe a Fein). But I can't see it getting a huge amount of use.

The cheap ones are just that , they vibrate and are really noisy compared with a more top end one , great addition to a toolbox .

I've got the original version of this tool, the Fein Multimaster, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend one of these as the budget alternatives are I am sure more than capable. The few Lidl / Parkside tools I've purchased over the years have been really impressive in terms of quality and performance, I'm sure the Aldi stuff is pretty good too. Got a few Screwfix / Titan things as well, also good. Just avoid the really budget stuff getting knocked out in the sheds.

Got the Aldi one and it's been great. Used it for all sorts of jobs and it's always performed well. I picked up a load of spare 'blades' from B&Q about a year ago, they had accessory packs for £1.50 in the clearance bin so I'm stocked up for ages.

It is a bit loud though but I can put up with that, fairly quick charging and battery life is good too.

I'd recommend a corded Erbauer one from Screwfix. Had mine for 3 years, done all sorts of jobs with it. It just works, really well, every time.

High end Makita cordless. Bought during my kitchen extension build. In short apart from the occasional awkward job I think it was money wasted! You just cannot get an accurate cut with them.

I have managed to get some fairly accurate cuts with my Bosch.

That's the problem "fairly accurate" isn't good enough if it's on show. It'll get used but not for trimming a door in situ etc.

I have the Bosch one mentioned and its great! Get the blades from ebay though they are much much cheaper. You can get a very accurate cut with it as long as you use the correct "tool for the job", its become my go to thing for many jobs now.

Have had a bosch for about 6-7 years.

It has needed repairing (by me) twice as the cable to the winding breaks off due to the vibration, would not buy another Bosch. It doesn't get a lot of use.

Saxton blades are over-rated, wore one of their "for steel" blades down last week trying to cut a steel screw - the bosch blade cut it easily.

I found myself in Aldi and had a look at their cordless multitool. I've picked one up and am charging it now. Fingers crossed it'll do what I need. If I get fairly handy with it I'll consider an upgrade in the future. Can't see myself ever shelling out for a Fein one though - I'm only ever going to be short and basic jobs with it.

Hmm, literaly bought a cheapo £30 one from Homebase this moring to help repair and fix a leg of an expensive bed frame. Even if I never use it again, it's been worth it as it was exactly what I needed - it's also exactly what I've needed for loads of little jobs that I bodged with other tools.

I so wish I'd bought one earlier.

The £30 one worked well and as I'll never use it for anything major, hopefully it'll last a while too. If not, I'll probably go with something a bit more substantial having used one now.

No confirmation bias in your choice of review then wink

Would have been nice to see what they were cutting other than a piece of 3x2 timber in a vice that I wouldn't even think of reaching for a multi tool to do.
