true, but surely they need people to be actively trying to make savings or the end result is that there will be no load reduction?

This is the thing. They are probably putting the feelers out for how little they can get away with paying, and still have people opt in.

We've been with octopus for a few years and are generally happy with them. We've talked a few times about getting solar, but not done anything about it. Octopus have now got another promotion with a discount, which looks to be about 12K for 14 panels and a 5kw battery with 3 years interest free credit- I've just asked for a personalised quote to get that price checked.
Has anyone any experience of octopus solar installation?
Doesn't seem cheap. I'm getting 16 x panels and a 13.5 KW Tesla 3 powerwall for £12500 (and the battery is being put in an outbuilding 20 meters away at the bottom of the garden so not a straightforward install)

If a decent incentive to shift and save power at certain times isnt there then I wont be doing it again. I gain more in the free hours.

They are probably testing how little they can pay to get the amount of power shift they want.
If they don't get enough on the first test as the incentive has gone down then they'll up it a bit.
Just a business trying to make as much money as it can.

Then the "business" is the government giving as little money as possibly to get the results they want. It's still someone trying to make/keep as much money as they can.

If they want anyone other than the most committed doing it they’re going to have to stump up a decent reward carrot. When I was on Agile I was on the stick side of this equation and the prices would go up instead.

Taking gaming the system out of the equation, how much were people actually getting in an hour by load shifting?

My guess is not very much. Probably less than £2

Not worth load shifting for that because you're basically asking people to eat at a different time. Too much hassle imo

Free leccy is much easier for Joe punter to make use of. They can put the DW, WM and dryer on. And car if they have it. Much easier to make use of

I made a lot more in free power use than I ever did from saving sessions.

It's not really an issue for most people to eat at different times. They won't, mostly because they are lazy, and with not enough incentive for it either.

eating, fair enough. but washing, drying, dishwasher, ganga farm lights can all be shifted, or isn't that possible either?

Depends what tariff you’re on. The saving sessions were usually between 5 and 7pm on weekdays, times that Agile users are used to steering clear of anyway. That’s why they didn’t work at all for me last year. I was literally making less than 10p on each session even after shutting the house down.

on agile (still!) so try to use as little as possible between 4 and 7. so same boat.like the free leccy sessions, they are normally when agile is very cheap or even negative, so would have shifted use to those windows anyway.
