Oak Orangery with Oak Bi-Fold
Discussion
Weve got two 15ft sets fitted and have had no problems but then they both sit under a huge verander so not massively exposed to the weather, theyre from LPD (leeds plywood) and i think they were manufactured by nu-fold, fitted both sets myself and have to say they are quite well engineered.
speaking of which, they are engineered oak so laminated on a hardwood core which is far more stable, solid oak i would steer well clear of in an enviroment where millimetres of movement result in doors not fitting.
Though with ours they are 90% glass and only the frame is oak for each leaf, very little to expand and contract, they look so much better than aluminium, not sure on veneered aluminium, not seen that.
Happen to be sat here so took a pic, all folded to left, cant beat it for spring and autumn

Thank you will check them out!
I was getting scared we were going to pay out the price of a 911 and get something that looked like this:

Seriously though, ID doors have a thin profile frame as well. I’m in the building trade and have been fighting these for over fifteen years.

Very nice!
What’s your opinion on leaving to silver or preserving the colour?
I can see the point in fitting aluminium if leaving to silver, but the golden oak colour is much nicer in my opinion. Just not sure about painting every year.
What weve done for all our external oak beams (but these are 200 years old) is to clean off completely either by jet wash or sand blasted, then leave untreated to go as white as possible (1yr in extreme sun) and then clear coat, doesnt go too dark that way but is good for 10 years with two coats of clear coat, the colour comes back with the clear coat but not too much. I’ll get a pic when i can, they look incredible against the bronze one way mirrored glass we used..
Hi All,
Progress is going well, foundations dug, bricks starting and walls being removed.
Windows will all be solid oak and the bi-fold will be engineered oak. Will give the lot a coat in a UV oil.
Onto floor tiles - we are having a wet floor heating so opted for tiles.
There are some great pictures on pinterest and houzz of the inside flooring flowing seamlessly to the paving. In the real world, I can't find anything that matches that I think will look good.
Has anyone done similar and has photo evidence?
Thanks

You need slot channel drainage in front of the doors like this stuff,
https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2F...
So you can get this look.
This is a house we've not long finished and not mine sadly.
For some reason i cannot get it the right way up? I've even tried turning to photo up side down and uploading it again but its still feckin wrong!
I wouldn't bother with a an oak bifold nor even engineered wood bifold if its going to get wet. Especially in an oak framed building!
Will work great for 5 years with regular adjustment ..... then ....
I would go for aluminium with as thin frames as you can find. Or windows and french doors.
