It looks like they've used second hand concrete , pitch is borderline but looks like they increased the headlamp and they are granular finish to help with the drainage, maybe he's a site tiler with no leadwork and renovation skills !

Thanks all for your responses.

In answer to some specific questions:
- it's not finished, they are coming back, but are waiting for me to replace my rotten fascia before they finish their work (not sure why it is dependent).
- they never contacted me to come to 'agreement' or for permission to grind the brickwork.
Not sure why they're waiting for you to replace your facia. If you do that it'll part cover the area they need to work on. They should seal the ground out channel and make good first. before you do the remedial work required.

I'd be tempted to get another roofer in to look at it and give you his honest opinion. Whilst I'm completely unqualified it all looks a bit of a bodge to me.
I recently had all of my facia boards and soffits replaced with uPVC. Might be a good opportunity to obtain a quote for the lot whilst you're at it.

Thanks for all the comments - helped me understand what I should expect.

Update:
- I got a lip hot welded to the edge of my flat plastic roof, and got the rotten fascia removed. (Circled in red)
- They used mastic to secure the leadwork in the 'wiggly' ground out groove (lower part of the tiled roof)
- They nailed leadwork to my extension (Middle part of the tiled roof)
- and finally 'dressed' leadwork over my flat roof lip (Top part of the tiled roof)
- They then fitted a new fascia.

I must say, I am not impressed with the quality of their workmanship:

That is terrible.

What on earth is that? I'd be having the neighbour and their 'builder' around for a meeting pronto.

Apart from the general 'tardiness' of the finish, what are the key things that need addressing do you think?

(I am not a Roofer, Builder or 'accomplished' DIY'er if I am completely honest!)

It's crap workmanship but they've done basically what I said and it should just about keep the water out .
You'll be wasting your time trying to get them to do it any better as that's probably as good as they know how to do it , I've spent to many days of my life putting stuff like that right . The only way you'll get a decent job is by finding a decent roofer and employing him yourself , I know that's not what you want to hear but it's the truth .
I ran my family roofing business for the last twenty years of its life that lasted three generations by the way .

Are you based on the Wirral by any chance? Not work planned at the moment but have just moved into the area and may well have to do something with the roof in time.

I'm in heswall , but the roofing firm was in Durham and I sold up a long time ago , I'm semi retired at the ripe old age of 53 , far to old to be clowning around on roofs ! Get in touch if your stuck and I may be able to point you in the right direction . You'll probably have to do it via this forum as my email address is wrong for pms .
Cheers
Paul .

That's what you should expect from 95% of "tradesmen" these days. They're all completely useless and you could do a better job yourself if you had the tools and time. The remaining 5% that know what they're doing and take great pride in their work are booked solid 2 years ahead and because of their reputation can pick and choose their jobs unlike the clueless dross that advertise on check-a-trade or mybuilder, for example. And as Paul Wirral says, you'll be wasting your time getting them back to do it properly because in their heads it is done properly. rolleyes

You've summed it up perfectly . All the check a trade type things are easy to join , just like trade associations and the like , headed note paper and a cheque usually does it !

To be fair, the generic building company who put in our extension got in a specialist to do the lead work without me asking them to and they appear to have done a pretty good job of it. Certainly far better than that!

Clearly some builders care about their work and know their limits.

ETA: Quite aside from the quality of the cutting and fitment, shouldn't they have soldered the joints up?

No , the joints are left to allow a little movement and some expansion and contraction or the lead will eventually split . They could have dressed the lead into the profile a lot better , its more laid on and pressed in rather than actually dressed into the tile . It'll do the job but it's not great to look at , that said , a few months down the line no one will look anyway .
