30th Anniversary Mazda MX-5 | Update!

The limited edition Racing Orange model has finally landed in the UK...

It feels like a long time since we learned of the Mazda's 30-year tribute to the MX-5 (it was actually unveiled at the Chicago show in February) - now we get the region-specific nitty gritty. Of the 3,000 Racing Orange cars build globally, the UK will get 550 cars: 370 of the soft-top convertible flavour and 180 hard-top RFs.

The healthy proportion reflects the size of the UK market, which has consistently proven itself to be deeply impressed with the MX-5. "In the three decades since the launch of the original model over 130,000 Mazda MX-5s have been sold in the UK. This is a sports car that has resonated with enthusiastic British drivers ever since its debut and four generations on it's as popular as ever," remarked Jeremy Thomson, Mazda's UK Managing Director.

Apparently keen to test the limits of that popularity, the manufacturer has not held back on the 30th Anniversary Edition's pricing: the convertible is £28,095 and the Retractable Fastback, £29,895 - a significant mark-up for what is essentially a funky paint and wheel upgrade (with a nice plaque). Still, you do get the Bilstein dampers, strut brace and limited-slip differential as standard, along with Recaro seats and Alcantara trim on the door cards. And, of course, it looks the business. Which ought to do it. On sale now.

ORIGINAL STORY - 19.02.19

Whether you like MX-5s or not, there can be no denying the impact it's had on the world of sports cars. Therefore with 1989 marking its 30th anniversary, Mazda was hardly going to let the MX-5's big 3-0 pass unnoticed.

Previewed last month, Mazda has now shown in full the 30th Anniversary Edition at the Chicago show. As expected, this MX-5 is extremely orange (the colour is Racing Orange, in fact), and can also be distinguished from other models in the range - in case the paint didn't do it - by the Rays RE40 ZS30 forged wheels, 30th Anniversary badge and orange calipers.

That theme continues inside, too, with orange accents on the seats, doors and gear lever. Note as well the Recaro seats, which actually look pretty decent.

Beyond that, the 30th Anniversary Edition is as you were for any MX-5: it will be sold as both a Roadster and an RF, and it would seem with either engine choice - certainly a specific one hasn't been mentioned just yet. As for actually obtaining one, Mazda says that 3,000 will be built across both body styles, which ties in with the anniversary.

We're still no clearer just yet on what the UK allocation of that 3,000 will be, though you'd have to imagine the car's popularity over here would mean a decent proportion could make it. We'll find out soon!

The Recaro seats really make the car as the normal ones are a bit flat and unsupportive imo, but Mazda in their un-wise ways only ever seemingly offer them in "limited edition" versions (such as this 30th anniversary one for example,) instead of offering them as an paid option. And irritatingly they offer the Recaros as a trim spec in many other countries including the US market but not here in the UK.
This version is a bit too orange for me. The RF really should have contrasting black A pillars and buttresses, no?

Prefer the red or metallic grey colour but oh so want one with the Recaro seats...with the 2019 updated engine-now 181bhp. Power to weight is then excellent and one of the last remaining fairly high revving natural aspirated engines on sale.

Can someone with experience of this car tell me if too-tall people can fit in them?

I am 6'4. Would not want to visit the dealer and leave 20 seconds later because I can't fit in the damn thing.

Mazda seemed to have cornered the market in endless 'special editions' in a desperate attempt to garner extra sales. It started within months of the MK1. It's all a bit of a con, you pay extra for some fancy paint job & 'limited edition' tacky stickers, yet look closely sometimes items ate deleted such as a decent sound system, air con. or whatever. I well remember a MK 1 special that gave you a chrome-effect boot-rack & special paint then took away the electric powered windows. Or some fake wood, odd-ball alloys but the basic low powered engine & awful black plastic blanks where some spotlights were. . Sort of insults buyers intelligence. Reminds of what Ford did to clear the last of the Cortina's. Note how few if any premium brands need to do this.

PedPro would likely kill that off.

Agree and always baffled me why they didn't do a proper Ltd edition that was properly quick, with really nice interior and trick fast road/racey bits on it in a GT3 kinda way.
Still at least you can build one yourself ..

I have an earlier Mk2 which is smaller than this and I'm the same height as you and I can fit in it, there's a knack to getting in with the roof on which involves me putting my butt down on the seat first then getting my legs in but once I'm in I'm very comfortable.

Might look at one of these new ones myself in a couple of years

Now thats a good example of how a standout colour, some much better wheels an some tasty seats make a car far more appealing to me!!

Would be fantastic if it had the bbr200 upgrade.

Just 3,000 cars will be produced globally, and fittingly for one of the world’s biggest MX-5 markets, the UK will receive 600 – 400 convertible and 200 RF.

The orange is better than the rather boring other colors available. Still waiting for the return of Blazing Yellow Mica....as on the 15th Anniversary Miata!!!

6'4 people fit in a soft top for sure, if your long in the legs short upper you might even fit in an RF, other way round no chance.

I'd but that tomorrow if I could! The world needs a bit of colour and that sure is a colour. Combine it with the orange Focus ST as the practical choice and it's the perfect pair.

Yes please. Great spec. Not hugely in love with the orange, but would take it considering the other goodies you get. So glad it’s available with the soft-top.
