Hey all, would be interested in comparing costs on your cost of ownership on 996 models.
I had a C4S for about 3 years and it cost me about 10k which included all of the servicing as well as more significant jobs.

I bought the car for 19k and sold it for about 18k 3 years on after doing about 25k miles, driven every day and kept outside (as I don't have a garage frown )

I guess this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' type question. It depends on vehicle usage, condition, what you want to spend money on (i.e. have a non-springing ashtray that a, I'll never use, and b. Porsche wanted ~£100 to repair it, so I'll live with it thanks!), how often you service and what the service finds.

Many dealers list service pricing on their websites so you get an idea from that, but you already have an idea from previous ownership it seems

No, it isn't.

It's comparing factual costs, i.e. what owners have actually spent, not "what might it cost".

There's no string involved wink

OP - My experinces was very similar to yours. I've had 2 x 996's and neither were particularly expensive to run when everything was taken into account (i.e. cradle to grave ownership, so including depreciation (nil biggrin), insurance etc etc)

My 996.2 @ 65K miles = £5K engine rebuild needed and I got it done on the cheap. Bore scoring on cylinder 6
My mate's 996C4S = £12K engine rebuild at Hartech. Bore scoring on cylinder 5 and 6
My mates's mate's 997.1 = £14K engine rebuild at Hartech. Bore scoring on cylinder 5 and 6

I don't personally know anyone else than us three who have owned one so I can only speak first hand

My 2003 C4 has cost almost exactly £12k maintenance in 5 years and 20k miles. This includes one £3.5k bill for an engine out job. On top of this it has had approx £1k on cosmetic paint work.
When I bought my 996 I did a bit of research on running costs and £2k/year seemed like a sensible budget.

Had mine for 15 months and done 5k in it and spent about £7k but 4 of them were on a complete new s/s exhaust from top gear and a Mo30 suspension kit. So £3k in one year that included brand new brakes and other necessary age related jobs doesn’t to be that bad. It’s a 2001 C2 manual 3.4 with 34k on the clock.

Had mine 11 years and I’ve done 110k miles in it - now on 170k.

A good year is under 2k. This year I had a major service, both radiators and the ACfixed (hadn’t worked for c.6 years). Bill was £2.3k. Last year I had new brakes and a load of other bits and bobs. Bill was £2.5k.

Worst year involved a gearbox rebuild a service and some other stuff - £4.5k. Closely followed by a full exhaust - nearly £3k.

My car sits outside, gets used pretty much every day, and gets driven hard a lot smile

Mine only does about 2500 or so miles a year, but it has done 140k total

I probably don’t count as having had an average ownership experience, but I’ve spent probably three times the purchase price of the car on maintenance and upgrades, and am in the middle of building a whole new engine for it.

Had the car for what will be three years this year/10,000 miles (it’ll hit 70k soonish).

I have an '03 996 Targa. Bought in November 2010 at 34,000 miles and now at 87,000 miles.

Oil and filter have been changed every 5,000 miles (not by me) with Fuchs Pro-S 05-40W esther oil bought from Opie.

Routine maintenance, bearing in mind the oil change interval, has cost £6,750. Tyres, Michelin PS2 N3 have cost £2,250.

Other costs have been:

73,000 miles: £2,250 for clutch, flywheel and uprated IMS bearing (nothing wrong with the one that came out).

76,700: £500 front brake discs, pads, damping plates and sensors.

80,800: £700 air conditioning radiators and fluid.

81,200: £2,100 metal coolant pipes (pin hole caused by rubbing on a plastic retaining clip), rear brake pipes over engine, air/oil separator, water pump, coolant. Some of these were done because they were easy to do while the engine was out.

83,000: £250 near side front link arm.

85,200: £600 front brake pipes.

85,600: £1,450 front dampers, springs, lower arms, track rod ends, bearing plates, drop links. All because of one corroded spring plate. Apparently, on the C4 they are separate! Not to worry, it now runs like a Rolls Royce.

In addition I had the car painted to smarten it up and spent a small fortune on the Targa roof.

I have an 02 C4S that I use as my daily driver and it currently sits at an average of £5.5k a year to run.

I’ve owned the car for 5.5 years covering 25k miles. I keep a running total of all money spent on parts, servicing and maintenance for the agreed value insurance and this years application had a rather scary total spend of £30k on it!

That figure doesn’t include buying the car, insurance, petrol or tax that is purely parts, servicing, maintenance, oh and upgrades!

The total was around £13k this time last year so just £3k a year but then it went in to Hartech for a full engine rebuild due to Borescore on cylinder 6.

I opted to go for a 3.9 conversion, new exhaust system and a couple of other mods.

It had the first post rebuild oil service at a specialist and then back again a couple of months later for a full service, new set of tyres and unfortunately a new front drive shaft.

All adding up to a total £30k spend in 5.5 years.

Mine will no doubt be due some large bills soon then. My 98 car cost me about £280 for the last year's ownership, (service, and a new battery), only do about 4000miles a year, hoping to keep the spending sensible for as long as posable.

To put in context, the last two new cars I brought both depreciated about £12k in three years, so the 996 is currently cheaper proposition.

2001 C4 bought at 42k miles, run to 48k miles over three and a bit years.
£911 (really!) on an initial “everything” service. Brakes and air con condensers had been done before I bought it.
I put on two rear tyres (£300?), DIY’d the alternator regulator and the radiators for about £200 for both jobs. I spent probably another £200 on DIYing bits and pieces (headlamp washer, one or two bits of underbody trim, mesh grills and a front splitter).
It had one other service - oil, filter and welding the exhaust boxes which came to about £700 all in.
I paid a lot for the car in October 2015 and I sold it for £500 less than I paid.
So it cost me £3000 to run for three years and 6000 miles.

Cost of ownership is largely going to depend on your starting point in terms previous work.
Buy a car that is in decent nick in the first place and I don't see why a 996 should cost anymore to run than any other similar performance vehicle.

My interpretation was different. Of course, facts are facts, but I read this with the inclusion of 'optional extras'. I agree mine at least has not been that expensive to run since taking ownership, certainly when compared to my old Griffith. Bills are aligned to those quoted above.

Reminds me I'm about 6 months out of date with my running cost spreadsheet.
From memory I'm in about 5-6k so far on a purchase price of 9.5k over about 4 years. But i do as much work as i can myself so saved a grand or two that way.

I spent a just under 5K in two years on a c4s.

Could have got away with less but it’s a labour of love isn’t it?

Made about the same amount of profit when I sold it so essentially free motoring.

Can’t argue with that!

Have spent circa £8k since purchase within first year of ownership due to engine out, ims bearing, gearbox service, rear brake pipes front discs, new set of tyres, wheels refurbed and several other little bits BUT this was expected as I had an independent specialist do a full pre purchase inspection and about 90% of what they advised has now been done.

This amount of work was also taken into account when purchasing the car

I do not expect any bills this year apart from annual service.

one last thing to sort is the sticking cup holder...... due to lack of use it does not spring out!
