Trying to sort some wine for the wedding and the red we want (Beyerskloof Pinotage Synergy - chosen as we've been to their vinyard in SA and its in budget) has come onto offer which will save us some cash - only thought is to how many bottles to get....

Thoughts are just Red & White for the meal & evening plus bubbly for the toast/evening should people want it. We supply all booze for day and evening and it's served to guests for £1.20 pp - a no brainer, we'll hit the supermarkets/costco nearer the time but the red should keep and is now on offer..

Total is 95 adults for the day, plus another 50 or so for the evening. Not many elderly and a good few in their 20's-30's....that drink like fish...

Main food is pork/seafood starter and Lamb main so red will likely be more popular - plus whatever isn't drunk we'll keep and polish off at a bottle or 2 a month...tables arranged as 10x 10 people...

Current thoughts are:

Bubbly: 24 bottles
Red: 48 bottles
White: 24 bottles

Sound about right?

Never underestimate the ability of tubby spinsters to consume white wine at a wedding. Post-consumption, they'll often be seen walking barefoot in the car park, carrying their own shoes and crying.

Not many coming thankfully!

Think the white will be ramped to 30 bottles - as I'll get it shortly before the wedding I can always take that back after...(whats not drunk obviously)

How about half a bottle per person of nice stuff on the table, and 1/4 of a bottle of bubbly per person.

Then have another bottle per person of cheaper stuff to bring out as it's needed. Plus other stuff.

Having an open bar that runs out would be a bad idea.

Make sure the kids doing the serving know they can take home half of the wine not served, but none of the spirits, for example.

Sounds about right I think, although I can't remember what we had years ago. All I'll say is make sure they know what you want to do with the wine at the end. Apparently we had a number of full bottles, opened but unused, that were tipped away at the end of the night as the caterers hadn't been provided with stoppers!!

Are you having a Champagne reception?

24 bottles is approx 144 glasses which is a touch on the low side for 95 guests in my opinion (nothing worse than running out). I would put aside a minimum of 2 glasses of Champagne for each guest if not. So 32 minimum.

Depending on your guests, I think your ratio of red to white is about right...but that really is more down to your guests. I would allow 1/2 a bottle of red per person and about half that of white...but again, it really depends on your guests. I think your numbers on the wine is about right.

Oh, and whatever you do, make sure that there is someone managing the alcohol. Otherwise you’ll end up with a bazillion half drunk bottles - just a pain in the arse and a total waste.

At all the venues we looked at for our wedding, the standard price for the catering always included 1/2 bottle of wine per adult that was having the meal. That gets your 48 bottles drunk at that rate if everyone has 2-3 glasses during the meal and sticks solely to red

Don't forget, you can buy 100 litres of Tizer for about £30.

Thanks all - will up the bubbly ratio and maybe even the wine too - end of the day we'll always drink it over the following weeks/months or take it back - same for beers/spirits.

The booze control process has already been incorporated into the invites and hopefully won't slip too much - a couple of tokens on part of the invite, after that we're doing a new drink for old policy....should help the staff too - the two tokens should help get 2 drinks to cover over-laps too.

We had about the same amount of guests last November and about the same amount of wine (but equal red and white) and then double the amount of bubbly as that’s all people seemed to want to drink any other wedding I’ve been at.

We also provided full Gin bar for the first few hours of reception which went down well.

Either way everything got drunk and I’m sure if I’d supplied more then even more would have got drunk.

I read that as you, sounding like a cross between Terry Thomas and Leslie Phillips, followed by a suggestive wink....

Find a decent wine merchant/off licence that will do sale or return. Then over order.

Decent bottles for reception/table. Wine boxes for the bar afterwards.

Impressive!

Just ordered 60 bottles of red for now....lets see how that goes!

Plan was to get ~40 crates of peroni's, ~10 bottles of each of the major spirits (vodka, Gin, Jaeger etc.) plus mixers etc. in the week before and see how we go!

Not quite the same but I organised a formal dinner in London a few weeks ago.

The 53 guests (all adults but 3 non drinkers) drank:-

19 bottles of bubbly
25 bottles of white wine
23 bottles of red wine
9 bottles of desert wine
2 bottles of brandy
2 bottles of port
64 bottles of Peroni

The white/red wine ratio is skewed as 2 white wine courses and only one red wine course if that makes sense.
