New build render/cladding options
Discussion
I am no expert, however, I wouldn't have thought render, in a dark and wet area of the country would fair well.
We are commercial cleaners, and render is a magnet for green/red/black algae, especially on north facing elevations. Algae thrives in dark and wet conditions, so up your way I'd imagine the wrong choice of finish.

So not as your opening paragraph then We are commercial cleaners, and render is a magnet for green/red/black algae, especially on north facing elevations. Algae thrives in dark and wet conditions, so up your way I'd imagine the wrong choice of finish.

No idea if it makes any difference, but the Hardie stuff is 8mm thick, compared with 12mm for the cedral.
I imagine the batten spacing needs to be closer with the Hardie board than the Cedral to stop it going wavy due to the thinner section. Less weight makes it easier to hang, but it does wobble around a bit until nailed.Best quote I had for the cedral I think was around £15 per board plus vat for a bulk order.

That's about the same price I was offered, but when I placed the order I was told because the merchant isn't a 'stockist' they couldn't supply it unless I bought 140 boards. I only needed 50. Ended up paying £22+VAT, which was pretty annoying. Best quote I had for the cedral I think was around £15 per board plus vat for a bulk order.
I've been around the houses quite a bit regarding availability of various bit and was told different stuff by different people so I've been quizzing everyone involved and have a pretty good understanding of the supply chain now. As I understand it, it comes in from Belgium to one supplier, they hold it at two sites, one in the North, one in the South and supply all the orders regardless of who you buy through. If you deal with someone else, the other 'suppliers' presumably get a commission, but 'stockist' doesn't mean they actually hold any stock.
So essentially there's one supplier and one price that goes down the more boards you order.

I've had a detailed look at the Cedral fibre cement board and despite being impressed at the wood effect they have managed to achieve, I'm still not convinced by the overall look of the thin boards.
Although I discounted it at the start, does anyone have experience with slate on vertical walls? This could be the most likely option at the moment but am curious to hear real world experience if they start to rattle over time/in wind (or any other pitfalls)?

I discounted slate for vertical bits of my dormer because if you have a slate roof it's too much. I'd think you'd still need something to contrast the slates somehow, which leaves you back where you started to some extent. I started fitting my Cedral last weekend, it's dead simple to do once you've framed everything and fitted the profiles. Having done some, I wouldn't want to do the Hardyplanks at 2/3rds of the thickness, the Cedral is floppy enough!
